When Chido was 7 she quit school to look after her brother and grandmother. At 11 she was given the chance to learn to grow mushrooms. This changed the course of her life and now at 24, Chido travels around Zimbabwe and the world teaching others to grow mushrooms and change their lives too. Chido Govera lives in a poverty-stricken community in Zimbabwe. As a child, she had to provide for her younger brother and blind grandmother. She tended a field where she attempted to grow maize, sorghum and millet. But the crops always failed. At the age of 11, she found a way to grow edible mushrooms using the waste from these failed crops. This turned into an opportunity for the community. She was able to provide food not only for her family and community, but she could help other orphans that could not afford to pay their school fees. She has used her idea to educate and help people throughout Africa and beyond. — Recorded live at the global event in Cardigan, west Wales in 2011.
