Approaching earnings is typically coupled with a level of increasing volatility. One approach is to define the risk; this can substantially reduce margin and potential loss. It can allow for a high number of occurrences of high probability trades (iron condors). Undefined risk is completely acceptable however, limits are no more than 5% of account and are in low price underlyings.
