On today’s special teaching edition of the Bible Answer Man broadcast (11/13/19), Hank continues his in-depth teaching on the significance of each word of the Prayer of Jesus, drawing from his new book Truth Matters, Life Matters More. In part two of the prayer our Lord taught His disciples to pray, we turn to our requests. As God dwells within us, filling us with his life and nature, so too he provides all that is necessary for the sustenance of our physical bodies and more. And when we ask our heavenly Father to “give us today our daily bread,” we pray in plural. Not only are we praying for our needs and those of our immediate family, but we are praying for the needs of our extended family as well. We do not pray as mere rugged individualists but as members of a community of faith. In praying, “Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors,” we may well be reminded of Christ’s parable of the two debtors (Matthew 18:21 –35), which impresses on us the need to be forgiving people! When we pray, “lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil,” we should immediately remember to “put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes” (Ephesians 6:11 ). Clothed in the armor we are invincible. Without it, we are a guaranteed casualty.
