Licensed Clinical Social worker, Karen Perez, tells us about how her education and career journey started after leaving a violent marriage. She shares her Becoming Story, telling us what it was like being raised by a mom diagnosed with Paranoid Schizophrenia, and her harrowing experiences as a survivor of intimate partner violence--violence that started with verbal and emotional abuse before getting married, and escalating to physical violence the night of her wedding. Karen educates us about how being in a violent, abusive relationship leads to a loss of self, loss of self-confidence, and loss of voice. Karen’s quest to learn and be trained to help others includes getting certified in traumatology, as well as becoming a certified Domestic Violence Counselor, and certified Forensic counselor. And to top it off—Karen is the first Latina elected official in Hillsborough County, Florida.
