Dr Hesselius, a practitioner of ‘metaphysical medicine’, relates the case of the Reverend Mr Jennings, a genial clergyman with a not-too-genial travelling companion.

The Irish author Sheridan Le Fanu is one of the all-time great authors of ghostly tales and is cited as an influence by great supernatural authors such as M.R. James, Henry James, and E.F. Benson. A master of gothic atmosphere, his stories today are remarkable for their psychological dimensions, seeming almost Freudian in their probing of human behaviour. His creepy tales can also be surprisingly progressive. Some of his most famous stories deal with the interior lives of adolescent women, subtly hinting at their sexual development, and the injustices that the world enacts against them.
