A lot of managers want to do One On Ones with their directs' directs, also known as skips. This is a bad idea.
Lots of managers want to have great relationships with their skip-level directs, or skips. We call them 'skips' because you would have to 'skip' a level on the org chart to get to them. Your boss's boss, therefore, would be colloquially or informally referred to as your 'skip boss.'
And great relationships are valuable, but Skip Level One On Ones are not the way to achieve them.
