The phrase is commonly attributed to Voltaire whose moral poem, La Bégueule, starts, “Dans ses écrits, un sàge Italien, Dit que le mieux est l'ennemi du bien” (In his writings, a wise Italian says that the best is the enemy of the good). Aristotle, Confucius and other classical philosophers all warned against extremism in general in their writings. In the early 1900’s, an Italian economist by the name of Vilfredo Pareto created a mathematical formula describing the unequal distribution of wealth he observed and measured in his country.
