Deirdre Bair won the National Book Award for her ''blockbuster biography'' of Samuel Beckett, ''the best introduction to an enigmatic giant of 20th-century literature'' (Christian Science Monitor). Her other acclaimed biographies include portraits of Simone de Beauvoir, Carl Jung, and Al Capone. Her books have twice been finalists for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, and she is the recipient of Guggenheim and Rockefeller Foundation fellowships.
