Former Army Major Rob Shenton served for over 20 years in theatres of combat including Afghanistan, Bosnia, Kosovo and Northern Ireland. Medically discharged in 2016 with depression and PTSD, Rob found running to be a way to deal with the mental health issues he lives with. He set about challenging himself to run the hottest, highest and coldest marathons on a three-part challenge that took him to the Sahara, up Everest, and to the North Pole. And all in aid of Help For Heroes, who he credits with helping him. Rob now speaks to audiences all over the world about the impact of running and mental health, sharing his journey. In this episode, Rob reveals: Exactly how running helps him live with the aftermath of working in such extreme environments How he stumbled upon the idea of his hottest, highest and coldest challenge The painful logistics of even getting to the start of Everest Marathon (it sounds a right slog) Why you want your best friends to be Russian when you're flying in for the North Pole Marathon How he started working with Help For Heroes He also recalls the experience of sharing a tent with Jody on the 2011 Marathon des Sables (a fellow pioneer, then!)
