The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) covers minimum wage standards that are so complicated, you need a flowchart to track them.
This is one of the things I learned from my recent podcast with Sandy Krauer, director of HR services with Total Focus HR Solutions.
Some things to remember:
- There is a federal minimum hourly wage -- $7.25/hour was established in 2009 and hasn't changed since then
- Each state can set its own minimum hourly rate -- it can be higher or the same
- Counties can establish their own minimum rates
- Some states have laws that make allowances based on the number of employees
