Mike DeBonis, Executive Director of GMC and native of Vermont, shares with listeners his own first hand hiking experiences with The Long Trail, including how in 2017 he completed a thru hike as if he was attempting it in 1917. Mike shares some of his favorite sections of the Long Trail, and how GMC is working hand in hand with local community partners and trail volunteers to maintain this unique historic trail for future generations. "Vermont’s Long Trail System, with its 272-mile footpath, 166 miles of side trails, and approximately 70 backcountry campsites (many featuring shelters) offers endless hiking opportunities for the day hiker, weekend overnighter, and extended backpacker. The Long Trail follows the main ridge of the Green Mountains from the Massachusetts-Vermont state line to the Canadian border, crossing Vermont’s highest peaks."
