CASE DEEP DIVE: The Long Island Serial Killer Case investigation
The case of the Long Island Serial Killer went unsolved for more than a decade. In December 2010 near Gilgo Beach on Ocean Drive, a shocking discovery - the badly decomposed bodies of four women were found, each wrapped in burlap.
Victims: Megan Waterman, Melissa Barthelemy, Amber Costello and Maureen Brainard-Barnes would become known as the Gilgo Four.
The case first started as a missing persons case of 24 year old Shannon Gilbert who was an escort from New Jersey. She disappeared after a out-call with a man in Oak Beach, near Gilgo. Her remains were discovered in 2011.
In 2023 an arrest in the case. 59 year old architect from Manhattan Rex Heuermann was arrested for three of the four murders.
Prosecutors say a combination of DNA evidence, cell tower data and witness descriptions made him the prime suspect in at least three of the Long Island killings known as the Gilgo Beach murders.
