Sermon preached on 2019-10-13 by Rev. John Conway. Worship series, "Imagine." Sermon, "Unlimited Possibility." Matthew 14:13-21.
“Jesus said to them, ‘They need not go away, you give them something to eat.’” Matthew 14:16
Where the apostles saw only scarcity, Jesus spoke to them from a place of abundance. When the apostles could imagine only a quick way out—send the people home—Jesus saw the unlimited possibility that comes from the Divine. The powerful message of Jesus’ simple command is that:
- God loves us and cares for us
- God calls us to act as disciples; and
- God empowers us to act.
God calls us to share in holy abundance even as our society calls us to compete for scarce resources.
During the coming week, look for the ways our secular world tries to make us afraid of not having enough. Look for ways to see that this is not true and to instead give thanks to God for holy abundance. In giving thanks, look for where and for whom God’s love and care are calling you to act.
