Richard Scolyer is our 2024 joint Australian of the Year and Medical Director of the Melanoma Institute of Australia, alongside his colleague and friend Professor Georgina Long. Less than a decade ago, advanced melanoma was fatal. Thanks to their work in immunotherapy, it’s now curable.

But in June 2023, Richard was diagnosed with incurable grade four brain cancer, with an average survival of 14 months. It’s now been 18 months since his diagnosis. Why is he still here? No one knows. It could be luck, or it could be the world's first experimental treatment he undertook.

Richard's book, Brainstorm, is out now.
