Why I Changed My Mind on Affirmative Action (Ep. 84)
Oct 13 2020 47 mins
Thank you everyone for the feedback on my 2020 California Propositions Guide! You can find the guide in the link below. In today's episode, Eugene and I focus on Prop 16, and the looming issue of affirmative action. As someone who was once staunchly anti-affirmative action, I talk about my journey and why I'm now a proponent. We also discuss how Asian Americans are uniquely situated in the affirmative action debate, and what that means for us. As always, thank you for listening! Crash Landing On You (Ep. 78)
May 06 2020 48 mins
It’s happening! Eugene is watching a Korean drama. And not just any, but the smash hit, Crash Landing On You. This show was popular enough even in the United States that there was a lengthy story about it in the Washington Post (link below). In today’s podcast, Eugene and David talk about episode 5 of the show, our likes and dislikes, North Korean culture, and our thoughts about Kdramas in general. Eugene also gives a verdict for what future (if any) K-dramas may have in his television consumption. Crash Landing is currently available on Netflix. As always, thank you for listening! Why I’m Not a (traditional) Christian (Ep. 59)
Jul 03 2019 38 mins
I’m not gonna lie, this one is personal for me. When I think back to why I started this podcast, at least at a subconscious level, it was partly because I wanted to speak out about this very topic. Many of the issues dividing “progressive” versus “traditional” believes have to do with human sexuality and gender. But as someone who grew up in the church, I believe there’s an even more fundamental problem at the core of traditional Christianity. It’s a problem I’ve thought about and have had many conversations about for years, it’s the central reason why I don’t consider myself a traditional Christian, and incidentally, it’s also a central reason why we’ve seen the explosive growth of “universalism” in recent years. Very special thanks to my brother Eugene who was willing to engage with me in an open and respectful way on today’s episode. One of the things I absolutely love about this podcast is having a sibling and co-host who is capable of having a fun, interesting, and healthy dialogue on even thorny topics where we may disagree. Thank you brother! And as always, thank you everyone out there for listening! Icebreaker: The $350,000 Car Dividing the Auto Industry (Ep. 51)
Mar 20 2019 27 mins
I’ve been sick for the past few weeks. When I’m sick I find I want to turn off my brain, meaning no news, books, podcasts, etc. But for some reason, I find watching videos about cars to be strangely relaxing. This is probably because I’m otherwise so removed from cars and the car industry. For me, it’s like the equivalent of the Food Network or HGTV. In this podcast extra, I ask Eugene for his thoughts about the one car that appears to be dividing auto journalists and car enthusiasts more than any other. We also discuss why we both feel minivans are superior to SUVs and share a quick update on our weight loss and fitness goals. Next week, we’ll be back with another full episode of the podcast. (Special episode) The PAAC Podcast - Origin Story (Ep. 1)
Jun 06 2017 49 mins
This is a special episode. The regular What Just Happened podcast will be back again soon! I'm thrilled to be part of the launch of the brand new PAAC Podcast! This is a project that PAAC co-founders Lydia Suh and Liz Lin had been wanting to do for months. And whether you call it divine intervention or just remarkable timing, the stars aligned to make it happen. Today’s episode is about origin stories. How Lydia and Liz met, how the PAAC Facebook group and podcast came to be, and looking ahead, what they aspire for the future. We want this podcast to be an extension of the Progressive Asian American Christian community. To that end, please subscribe to the podcast, spread the word to your friends and family, and let us know what you’d like to hear on the show. We would also be very grateful if you helped others discover the show by leaving a rating and review on iTunes. Thank you to everyone who helped put this podcast together. And special thanks to all the members of the PAAC Facebook community, who have created a space and community where people feel at home. Thank you all for listening! How to be an Ironman (Ep. 16)
Mar 14 2017 68 mins
It doesn’t seem humanly possible. Swim 2.4 miles in open water. Bike 112 miles--farther than the distance from Manhattan to Philadelphia. And then, assuming you have any energy left, run a full length marathon, 26.2 miles. All back to back to back, in less than 17 hours. That is the Ironman triathlon—widely considered one of the most difficult one-day sporting events in the world. (And not to be confused with “Iron Man” Tony Stark of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.) Today, I speak with three men who have all completed full length Ironman races and are training for more. I ask them to do a bit of soul searching--while I do a bit of my own--as they talk about what drives their ambition to compete in this crazy race. They discuss what it takes to finish an Ironman and whether or not it’s fair to describe Ironman training as “selfish.” (Lots of shout outs to significant others in this episode!) We talk about training schedules, logistics, nutrition, and the mental challenges of completing a race. And in a twist, regular contributor—and triathlete in her own right—Jennifer Lee Koh joins us to reveal what it’s like to be an “Ironmate.” Many thanks to Rob Koh, Jack Chen, and Sam Chung for taking the time to talk and reflect! Sam, Jack, and Rob are all part of the Trinity Endurance Club or TEC—a group that Sam started to build and foster a community of fitness fans. This was such a fun conversation, and I am so inspired by your stories! Thanks for listening! SUBSCRIBE, RATE, and REVIEW What Just Happened? on iTunes, Stitcher, Google Play, and SoundCloud. The Future of Evangelical Christianity (is it DOOMED?) and the Fight over Sanctuary Cities - WJH Unscripted (Ep. 13)
Jan 20 2017 67 mins
We are HOURS away from the inauguration of President Donald Trump and I am THRILLED to have Jeremy Weese on the show. And even more good news, regular contributor Jennifer Lee Koh is back. We didn't scare her away! We take a deep dive into why white evangelicals voted for Donald Trump in such large numbers and why Jeremy thinks evangelicals "don't know how to vote." Jennifer explains what sanctuary cities are and we discuss the looming battle between federal and local governments over immigration. Thank you so much Jennifer and Jeremy for coming by! Back From the Dead: The Near Death Experience (Ep. 9)
Dec 05 2016 42 mins
Near death experiences have reentered pop culture in recent years with best-sellers like “Proof of Heaven” and “Heaven is for Real.” But are near death experiences legit? Are NDE’ers actually having out of body experiences and travelling towards a light at the end of the tunnel? Or are they merely illusions of the mind? Today we tell the harrowing, sometimes tragic, and extraordinary stories of three individuals who might just possibly have travelled to the other side. Ep. 5: The Secret Appeal of Donald Trump - What the Media is Missing and Why it Matters
Nov 09 2016 31 mins
Despite the wall-to-wall coverage of Donald Trump's presidential campaign since last summer, the media is missing a huge (YUGE!) reason for his appeal. Donald Trump’s secret appeal is an issue that goes straight to the heart of what it means to be an American, and may have major consequences for the future of American politics. Ep. 6: The Death of Elisa Lam - now in Mandarin! (feat. Grace Ong)
Oct 17 2016 41 mins
After a loooong hiatus, new content is coming to the podcast soon. In the meantime, my friend, the amazingly talented Grace Ong, has produced an edition of Episode 6: The Death of Elisa Lam translated completely into Mandarin. When Grace first approached me with this idea, I honestly wasn't sure it would be possible. I certainly couldn't contribute, since I can't read Chinese or speak Mandarin. But through incredible persistence and effort (and possibly some help from the supermoon!) this busy mother of two managed to find time to translate the entire transcript of the episode, record the narration in Mandarin in her own voice, and edit the content into a finished product. Grace is clearly a person who needs her own podcast! :) Grace told me she was motivated to do this project in order to spread word about Elisa's story to a wider Mandarin speaking audience, particularly given the wild rumors and speculation about Elisa Lam's death that were just as rampant in China as they were in the U.S. If you happen to know anyone who's primary speaking language is Mandarin, please consider recommending this episode to them. And thank you Grace for putting this episode together! SUBSCRIBE to What Just Happened? on iTunes, Stitcher, Soundcloud, and Google Play. Reach me at: My website: www.podcastenthusiast.com (NEW!) Ep. 4: Common Core Strategies for Success
Dec 10 2015 50 mins
In the last episode I discussed the origins of the Common Core and its pros and cons. But what if you are a parent or student living in the Common Core world today? I interviewed former high school math teacher Hemant Mehta, and we discussed practical strategies parents, students, and teachers can adopt in learning math. Among the questions we discussed were: What do I do if I don’t understand the “new” way schools are teaching math to my child? What is “number sense” and how can I help my child obtain it? How do I form a constructive relationship with teachers? What do math teachers wish parents knew about teaching and education? What if my child is bored or the lessons are “too easy”? What are Hemant’s thoughts on the Common Core standards? About standardized testing? I hope you find Hemant’s advice as useful as I did! Interview recorded on December 2, 2015.
