Behind the Bastards

Oct 16 2020 69 mins 55.3k

There’s a reason the History Channel has produced hundreds of documentaries about Hitler but only a few about Dwight D. Eisenhower. Bad guys (and gals) are eternally fascinating. Behind the Bastards dives in past the Cliffs Notes of the worst humans in history and exposes the bizarre realities of their lives. Listeners will learn about the young adult novels that helped Hitler form his monstrous ideology, the founder of Blackwater’s insane quest to build his own Air Force, the bizarre lives of the sons and daughters of dictators and Saddam Hussein’s side career as a trashy romance novelist.

I enjoy this podcast

DaniUG Oct 16 2020
Behind the bastards es un podcast único en su género. No solo es informativo sino que es tremendamente divertido. Te descubre a lo peor de lo peor y te lo pone en contexto. Para mi, imprescindible.

AMStoTMJ Oct 14 2020
Most fascinating, engaging and informative historical podcast ive heard since Dan Carlin

angeluz Oct 10 2020
Tried this podcast once, the stalin episode, by the third comparison with Trump I closed it and I'm never coming back. First they're fawning over a mourderous dictator because "he's cute" to then proceed to compare his absolute criminal sociopathy with the orange man whose orange and very bad. Great insight guys, totally the same thing that's why you're currently in siberia... Because Trump is just like Stalin. Total TDS.

Don Longjohnson Oct 08 2020
Best work Robert has done so far

jude Oct 01 2020
This female cohost needs to expand her vocabulary. Every comment replete with fbombs and expressions of feigned outrage. Given the dark history of racism in the U.S. this hardly allows one to sit in judgment of Canada.

KingPi Jun 23 2020
Disinformation and political sabotage.

The reason why we can't let them all come is because they would all f****** come and your money would be worthless

Listener Sep 15 2020
Boring. Don't bother.

mybloodis98?ffei Sep 25 2020
like drunk history but with machetes and raytheon rants. 10/10 what more could you even ask for. also, go Sophie!

dillinger Sep 16 2020
As a practitioner of macheticine, this podcast is a must listen twice-weekly experience. It keeps me up on all of the latest advances in macheticine, as well as informing me about the biggest bastards in history. If you are a Reverend-Doctor like me, this podcast is for you!

Knox in Box Sep 16 2020
My absolute favorite PodCast, I've grown bored with all others. Robert keeps me interested.

tuhraycee Sep 13 2020
Excellent series. Finally some unbiased, clear-eyed information on the origin of and path that USA policing has taken to get to the horror show that it is.

Terry.g Sep 11 2020
BtB never disappoints.five stars

Audioworm Sep 08 2020
Informative and funny podcast that handles the darkest topics while giving you something so you don't hate everything at the end. Evans is also a great host and journalist, which shows through out

TheSmartPig Aug 27 2020
Seemed pretty closed-minded and hateful. I would rather avoid putting hate into the body and would hope that in this day and age we could try and mend our differences. Do you though!

MG Aug 22 2020
Basically a history lesson on the some of the worst people in history with some gallows style humor to keep you from offing yourself from the ugliness of it all. Essential listening for anyone who wants to know how things got so bad in the US in 2020.

Stephen D. Marti Aug 18 2020
Great Stories... Robert is New Age Walter Cronkite...

ME Aug 16 2020
Amazing really funny and good at teaching me stuff

zilaina Aug 12 2020
It's your R rated history class for after high school that fills the masochist void in your soil.

ghostface028 Aug 10 2020
Host is radical left. Fist 20 episodes where good. Then it became terrible. If you want brain washed into believing Osama Bin Laden had a point, then by all means this leftist crap is right up your alley.

idemcurtin Aug 04 2020
Robert, Sophie and Danl are an amazing podcasting trio. I have always struggled with history, but Robert with his quick wit and we'll researched topics have educated me better than my history teachers! This one is always in my rotation!

Tallen Apr 14 2020

Masika Apr 01 2020

theamyman May 03 2020
I never miss an episode

Seb Jun 18 2020
One of the best podcasts available

HughJascauk Jun 20 2020
Interesting concept but Evans is so fucking pompous that he likes to wander off into the weeds and pontificate until the horse is beaten dead instead of staying on topic.

Lurch Jul 12 2020
Informative and funny, not least because of the way they mispronounce English Town names. Leicester is Lichester and Gloucester is Glawchester. Hilarious! BTW (in case they read their reviews, it's pronounced "Glosster & Lester". Great pod though.

Jehuda Blumensch Jul 14 2020
Best podcast ever!

Sagebrush24 Jul 05 2020
"Abandon all hope, all ye who enter here." This podcast won't restore your faith in humanity, but it will give you the lowest of low downs on the most horrific people who exist or ever existed.

Aguecheek Aug 01 2020
Great insight into many evens and people that I have never heard of (Saddam Hussein as a romance novelist and King Leopold II's brutal regime in the Congo come to mind). Sometimes the guests can be a bit naff, or Robert Evans can be really off the ball. Still a great podcast.

SCEngels Jul 14 2020
Robert Evans, journalist extraordinare, hits the ball out of the park yet again. This podcast is a staple of my education into the realm of bastardry. 10/10 No notes.

Bricebox Jul 04 2020
Best series about the worst people. Fuck Koch

cuggy Jul 03 2020
Essential listening

Finch Jun 26 2020
A great listen, super informative

Charliezimbali Jun 25 2020
I really enjoy the well researched topics, the well structured storylines and banter. Well done for a thoroughly enjoyable podcast, no matter what the topic.

astrangehop Jun 25 2020
Making the monsterous fantastically entertaining. Despite the long format, it's eminently bingable.

Andrés Rodríguez Jun 14 2020
Robert does great research and presents a generally pretty fair view of the people he writes on. Sadly, more often than not his guests are mediocre or just plain cringe. Would love it if he dealt with more historical figures from the past rather than vent his political frustrations with shitty people from the present, but hey, it's not my show.

Hell2Pay Jun 13 2020
Dave Grossman is a bastard, one of the worst in America. Robert does an awesome job of telling us why and explains what Killology is and how it's affecting the country.

jennruth Jun 10 2020
Seriously dude know you were trying to be funny but cock fighting is illegal and wrong.

Addictedazpromis Jun 10 2020
Love it, but struggle when Sophia is guest...not a misogynist

slamdancenudle Jun 07 2020
Was just here for the intro but accidentally listened to an entire episode and now I want to burn a lot of institutions.

cbonde101 Jun 04 2020
By far my favorite podcast. Great mix of history and comedy. Never miss an episode.

angelgrl721985 Jun 04 2020
Great podcast, highly recommend!

nakkis Jun 04 2020
Robert's an incredible journalist, and it shows. The show is well researched, and even though the subjects can make you lose all your faith in humanity, he's somehow able to give you hope.

jojoblue Jun 03 2020
Solid research great story orator

deep state techn Jun 02 2020
One of the best shows out there today, sheds light on some of the most dangerous people past and present

nilianore May 25 2020
Y'all know the name. Y'all know what comes from ignoring the mistakes made by our progenitors. Robert Evans gives hope of learning from the atrocities of avarice, power and sycophancy while lending a platform to comedians and commentators from different spheres of life. One does not need only take him at face value, as the lightest amount of personal research will reveal what we have ignored for too long.

405Hermit May 25 2020
Absolutely amazing. I'm a dedicated listener regardless of the topic. Very educational.

jawieling May 20 2020

Vizsla826 May 19 2020
Hits the right balance of reveling in awful people while also pointing put they are horrid

kdm852 May 19 2020
Easily one of my favourite podcasts. A bit America-focused, but very humorous, despite the content.

NotoriousAMB May 12 2020
This podcast is eye opening, disturbing, and consistently excellent. Robert Evans is brilliant and funny and excels at telling captivating tales about terrible people.

Katherine May 12 2020
Funny and horrifying. Has fascinating and darkly hilarious stories which I've often never heard anything about before. And some episodes are just really important to hear.

pigalek May 10 2020
Dang good two parter!

KEP May 07 2020
Fun listen every time, if distressing and shocking along the way.

Roland May 05 2020
One of the best non-fiction podcasts out there featuring quality research, merged with the kind of dark humour you have to have to approach the topics involved. The show is an inbuilt content warning that you really do cover some of the worst people in the last 150 years or so.

cockwomble May 05 2020
Well researched, funny, and tightly edited. Even beyond the entertainment value this show is really educational

Sp00nfed May 02 2020
I don't miss an episode. Robert, you're a modern Hunter S Thompson.

em_geekly May 02 2020
Extremely well researched, delightfully funny, horribly depressing. What else could a podcast listener want?

MDB May 02 2020
Twice a week you learn something about the worst people in history. Really informative.

c3168014 May 02 2020
Dorito level brilliance.

thewobblingweebl May 02 2020
A great way to start every Tuesday and Thursday.

king-doofus May 01 2020
Okay, this show is funny and informative, these are subjects you won't find anywhere else. Robert is obviously biased but I am confused. I hear him doing good reporting, I hear him claiming to be an anarchist yet he just parrots blue-check woke Twitter talk constantly. Portrays conservatives, libertarians as evil or stupid and has the ice coldest takes. Like rolling stone from ten years ago ice cold takes. Some of the guests are so vapid as to be unlistenable. Sophie likewise adds very littl

Bran Apr 28 2020
Hilarious host, depressing topics. Someone's gota do it though, i'd sooner stand on machete Roberts side.

ScS Apr 28 2020
Will machet-icine cure Covid 19? There's only one way to find out. Heeeeyah!

UFOllie Apr 21 2020
Funny and informative. Robert Evans is an entertaining host.

Scie Grey Apr 19 2020
Hilarious AND depressing! The people responsible for the darkness of both history and the modern world are discussed at great and horrible length. And then, bagels are struck with machetes.

Þóra Apr 18 2020
One of my favorites. Robert's writing is hilarious.

Rhiannon Apr 16 2020
Funny and well researched

Schmake Apr 14 2020
Keep up the good work.

thomasvaudin Apr 13 2020
Continually hilarious and on point. Absolutely adore this podcast

Justin Apr 11 2020
Overall a very good podcast. I definitely prefer when he brings in people who have a history in studying the topic of the episode, they always bring more to the conversation as opposed to just listening and providing a joke here and there
