EP 97: Guided Elk Hunt or DIY? Pros & Cons
Dec 01 2020 96 mins
Guided or DIY elk hunts? A question we have been getting a lot these days. Many hunters planning their upcoming hunts, especially first timers, are weighing whether they should hunt DIY or consider hiring a guide: "What strengths does a guide bring to a hunt that I couldn't?" "Would I learn more from a guide?" "Will I have more success?" "Can I afford it?" "Can I get a guide on public land?" "What do you recommend?" On Today’s Edition of Blue Collar Elk Hunting, your elk hunting coaches talk the pros & cons of guided vs DIY elk hunts. Included in the discussion is how not all guided or "do it yourself" hunts look alike and the variables that can bring the two closer in some ways as well as put them on the opposite ends of the scale in others. It's a great topic and one where your coaches have plenty of experience on both sides of the fence. Hope you enjoy the episode. Aug 07 2020 58 mins
So you have made to the elk woods and you look around and say to yourself, WHAT NOW? You are not alone. If it’s your first time or your 10th time elk hunting, sometimes the toughest part is knowing where in the heck to start. Where to start looking for elk? To start calling? And where do you go from there once you do start? The whole process can become intimidating to the point that a person can feel lost and question everything they are doing. On Today’s Edition of Blue Collar Elk Hunting, a collaboration podcast that was an interview of Elk Hunting Coach Joe Giglia by Chad Ryker and the BackCountry Rookies Podcast. The idea of this show was to help new hunters not be intimidated by the mountains and elk hunting. Joe settles some of the confusion and talks through scenarios to help prepare a new hunter for the mountain and the elk. Jul 28 2020 95 mins

On Today’s Edition of Blue Collar Elk Hunting, this episode is inspired by the questions rolling in from our listeners. There is a lot of nervousness mixed in with the excitement out there and we totally understand. And tonight your elk hunting coaches start eating away at those questions beginning with the concern of not being able to get boots on the ground to scout. Or finding them too far in and not knowing what to do if you did kill one. EP 77: Elk Set-Ups Demystified
Jul 21 2020 78 mins
Have you ever hooked a fish and then didn’t know how to reel it in? That’s exactly how it can be for us as elk hunters. We finally get a response to that location bugle we have been perfecting for weeks and THERE HE IS... it’s ELK ON! But... then what? Our mind starts racing.... Do I set up and call from here? How close should I be to set up? Do I get closer? How do I know where I should set up? All very important questions y'all. Your set-up is the last crucial component of getting into position to close the deal. No set-up, No shot. Just another fish story about "the one that got away". On Today’s Edition of Blue Collar Elk Hunting, your elk hunting coaches are at it again and this time they are out to demystify the ‘when’ and ‘where’ of setting up on a bull. Not only will they help you with the basic decision process of set-ups, solo or with a partner. But they cover a whole new approach to look and understand setups in a way never talked about before. The differences between "Dynamic" and "Static" set-ups. So pull up a chair y'all. Hope you enjoy the episode. EP 76: The "WHY" of Calling Elk
Jul 14 2020 72 mins
Cow Calls, Location Bugles, Lip Bawls, Challenge Bugles... Practicing in your garage or in your vehicle on the way to work. Getting chased out of the house! We know exactly where you are with your elk calling. Any respectable elk hunter within a thousand miles is going through the exact trials and tribulations. And the sounds are starting to come together, but you still have that anxiousness. There are still all those questions about when, how and where to use each of those calls? On Today’s Edition of Blue Collar Elk Hunting, your elk hunting coaches are here to help you... well...help yourself. (Huh?) The first question to fix your anxiousness shouldn't be about the when, how and where. The most important question simplifies the whole process. It's all about the "WHY". Why you would use a particular call. Your elk hunting coaches are going to break down the why into basic categories and talk about the calls used in each of them. For example, when it comes to bull sounds, are you trying to Locate, Participate, Irritate, Exclude or Challenge? They also discuss cow sounds. Are you trying to Locate, Relax, Pull a Bull, Demand Attention or Plead for Attention? Well y'all, pull up a chair and let's talk about it. Hope you enjoy the episode! EP 74: Part 1 - Your Top 3 Elk Hunting Concerns
Jun 30 2020 82 mins
How incredibly exciting is it when you draw that elk tag! You picked your state, researched hunt units, applied and now you're rockin' with a 2020 elk Tag!! Then, reality sets in and that excitement turns into a string of thoughts, questions and concerns about specific things needed to have a successful hunt. And when it comes right down to it, the three biggest concerns we are getting from listeners are questions about 1) Finding Elk, 2) Calling Elk and 3) How to get knowledge about the hunting area. On Today’s Edition of Blue Collar Elk Hunting, it's Part 1 of a two part series with the ElkBros Coaches sinking their teeth right into those concerns. Up first, "Finding Elk". EP 71: The Aggressive Elk Hunter
Jun 09 2020 98 mins
Elk Hunting is about encounters and opportunities. The more encounters you have, the higher your odds at having an opportunity and closing the deal. But how is it that some people have so many more opportunities? Is it luck? My father had a saying. Whenever I would tell him he was lucky, he would always tell me "Luck is nothing but skill and opportunity meeting". When I asked him how it was that he had so many more "opportunities" than others, he just looked at me,... winked and said..."because I create MY OWN opportunities". When it comes to elk hunting, there are going to be plenty of guys and gals that have encounters and opportunities this coming season. They are going to be in the right place at the right time. But if you want to be "That Hunter", the one out of 10 that are consistently having opportunities and getting it done, year after year, then let me share a little lesson from my dad...you are going to have to learn how to create your opportunities. On this Tuesday's Show, We talk about how to create your elk hunting opportunities by being an aggressive hunter? But what does it mean to be and aggressive elk hunter? Is it screaming challenges? Is it an attitude or a temperament? Is it being a wrecking ball and forcing the issue? Well, let's see....the answer to those would be "no", "yes" and "yes and no", lol. In this episode, we are going to explain exactly what it means to be an Aggressive Elk hunter. How you too can go after those hunting opportunities like a dog on a bone, focused and yes..."Aggressive". Just the shear vastness when you first look at a map of a hunting area can be intimidating and have you asking yourself, "Where in the heck do I start?" EP 67: Part 1- Elk Hunter's Best Investments for Success
May 12 2020 88 mins
This year alone, thousands of dollars are going to be invested in preparation for the upcoming season. It’s safe to say that pretty much 100% of the guys hunting for elk this year will have all the gear they need. But less than 10% of hunters, on average, will punch their tag this year. So what is the difference? Your best investment for success on your upcoming elk hunt is to invest in those areas that are going to differentiate you from the pack, and give you the best chance to be that 1 successful hunter out of 10. The goal of this Series is to help you identify those areas to best invest your Focus, Time, Energy and Money. Think of it as an "Insider Tip" into your own Elk Hunter Stock. EP 63: Part 5A -Solo Archery Elk Hunting...Calling Strategies (1st half)
Apr 14 2020 53 mins
To successfully fill your tag as a Solo Archery Elk Hunter, it takes a culmination of skills, abilities and knowledge. Elk Hunting Coach, Joe Giglia, has taken 34 public land elk with his bow in the last 36 years. When asked about the secret to consistently filling his tag each year, he is quick to state that the first and foremost number one reason for his success is his calling knowledge and ability. Calling is the number one tool in the bag for a solo hunter to create opportunities. Understanding when and how to use those calls is what separates the percentages of those filling their tag once every five to ten years, from those taking their elk consistently almost every season. Today's Part 5A of our Solo Archery Series on Calling Strategies and Techniques is so full of content, right at two hours, that we had to split it into two parts. Along with our ElkBros Shoutouts, the first half of the episode covers: Two common mistakes Problem with the Challenge Bugle Being effective as a beginning caller Easiest and most effective calls not used Turning a basic bugle or cow call into an advanced call Specific Solo guidelines and philosophy Understanding Bull Elk Modes The Double Bugle Engaging or Ignoring A tight setup Coming up next: Part 5B of our Calling Strategies & Techniques. EP 56: Hunting Elk in High Pressured Areas
Feb 25 2020 84 mins
Do you shy away from hunting high pressured areas? Over the counter tags (OTC) are a great way to insure that you're able to hunt elk every year. But many hunters worry about having to deal with the sheer numbers of other hunters in the woods and the effect the pressure will have on their chances to punch a tag. Sure, hunting popular OTC areas comes with challenges. But that can either become your excuse… or the feather in your cap. Every year, in the most pressured areas, with some of the lower success rates, there are still going to be hunters getting it done….making it happen. So why not you? On this show, we are going to talk about hunting high pressured areas and discuss ways for you to adapt your thinking to find the “holes”. Not just the locations or places where elk can be found, but also in the time you choose to locate and hunt.
