87: Healing Chronic Pain with A Sense of Purpose
Jan 14 2021 47 mins
Early last year I had a conversation with Dr. Palmer Mackie about his 5-week Integrative Pain School program that he had developed and improved over the course of 19 years. As you will hear, he is board certified in lifestyle medicine and incorporates those modalities to help his patients move away from opioids towards a program that offers lasting and drug free results. Dr. Mackie added another component to his program called Ikigai. This is the Japanese world for having a sense of purpose. Dan Buettner’s work on The Blue Zones also found that having a sense of purpose was a common characteristic found in the longest lived people of these regions. I reached out to Dr. Mackie recently to see how he was doing. He is now working at Oak Street Health where he will be launching a Pain Program for their 4 health centers. As you listen to his conversation, I would like you to see if finding a sense of purpose and incorporating more movement into your life will help make 2021 more manageable. It seems like we will have more of the same virtual experience this year. When we speak of pain we are not just referring to physical pain. We take into consideration depression and mental health. I would love to hear your thoughts. 68: Vegan Primary Care with Dr. Scott Harrington
Oct 19 2020 36 mins
Dr. Scott Harrington is the founder of Vegan Primary Care, an online family medicine practice. He is now licensed in 42 states including Texas. So make sure to listen to the entire episode to learn how you can get started as a patient. In this episode, we learn Dr. Harrington's personal story of why he became vegan and why he now prescribes plant-based foods to his patients. He also tells us about his Meal Planner which extends "Meatless Mondays" to everyday of the week: https://www.dietnosis.com/vegan-meal-planner/ Vegan Primary Care is the creation of Dr. Scott Harrington, a board-certified Family Physician with 17 years of experience in Family Medicine. Beginning his career using standard methods, he personally adopted a plant-based diet in 2012. Since then he experienced dramatic improvement in his energy levels, exercise endurance and recovery time. His weight, blood pressure, blood sugar, and hormone levels all normalized. This convinced Dr. Harrington to focus on teaching patients what he learned, and the effects were impressive – many patients suffering with chronic illnesses improved dramatically, and many were able to stop all their medications. "As board-certified physicians, we provide many of the same services as any primary care doctor you see in person – writing prescriptions, ordering imaging or lab tests, and making referrals. But rather than rely only on the Western model of medicine, which manages chronic conditions with pills, we believe in plant-based care that seeks to achieve optimum health through a whole-foods plant-based diet, enjoyable exercise and maintaining quality relationships." https://www.veganprimarycare.com/ Hope you enjoy this episode. _______________________________________ LISTEN/SUBSCRIBE TO OUR PODCAST: You can also listen on: ➤iTunes: http://bit.ly/PBDFWiTunes ➤SoundCloud: http://bit.ly/PBDFWSoundCloud ➤Website: https://plantbaseddfw.com/podcast ➤YouTube: https://bit.ly/plantbaseddfw ➤iHeart Radio: http://bit.ly/PBDFWiHeartradio ➤Amazon Music: http://bit.ly/PBDFWAmazon ➤Stitcher: http://bit.ly/PBDFWStitcher ➤Spotify: http://bit.ly/PBDFWSpotify About Plant-Based DFW Podcast: ________________________________ Our podcast is recorded in Dallas, Texas and features guests from all over the world. 66: Stage 4 Prostate Cancer, 9 Months Expired!
Oct 12 2020 32 mins
Three years ago, Paul Lowell was diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer. During routine visits his PSA level went from 1.1 - 87 within a 6 month period. By the time he was diagnosed, the cancer had already spread to his lymph nodes & bones. His oncologist basically felt that chemotherapy & radiation would only make him worse. He adopted a plant-based diet after Dr. Riz told him about the power of plant-based foods. IG: @lisa.lowell.31 Hope you enjoy this episode. 64 Plant-Based Potluck Hosted by Cancer Survivors
Oct 04 2020 20 mins
Today’s bonus episode was recorded last year in 2019. This was the first time we attended a plant-based potluck by Pat & Dianne Doyle of Plant Based Dallas. They were recently featured in the Dallas Morning News for the work they have been doing for the last 6 years. Pat & Dianne Doyle are cancer survivors who learned about the power of plant-based foods months after making drastic choices. To learn more about their story you can listen to episode 8 of our podcast. Here is the link: https://soundcloud.com/plantbaseddfw/pat-diane-interview We got to know them last year and have now attended several of their events. As a matter of fact, I learned about jar swaps from Dianne. In this episode, Dr. Riz introduces us to the group. This was a casual conversation that I filmed with my iPhone. He talks about the devastating effects that lifestyle choices can have on the body and why he now prescribes plant-based nutrition to his patients. He answers group questions. He also addresses our initiatives to help spread the world about lifestyle medicine. Keep in mind that this was pre-COVID. Some of our events have been canceled as a result. Hope you enjoy this episode. 62: Life After Menopause with Dr. Nancy Eriksen
Sep 24 2020 31 mins
This is such a valuable lecture that I wanted to share it with our listeners. This is with Dr. Eriksen's permission. Dr. Nancy Eriksen speaks on the impact of nutrition/lifestyle factors on: *hormonal health *osteoporosis *breast cancer risk You will learn about lifestyle strategies you can implement to optimize your health during menopause. As well as the impact of a whole food plant based diet and how it can enhance your hormonal health, prevent osteoporosis and breast cancer. "Nutrition can impact the symptoms of menopause, which are vasomotor symptoms including hot flashes and night sweats. There are central symptoms including insomnia, mood changes, brain fog, and urogenital symptoms such as vaginal dryness and painful intercourse. Vasomotor symptoms are common in women with hot flashes occurring in nearly 80% of women in the West in the US and Europe, as compared to relatively few of Asian women. In fact, in the Japanese language, there isn't even a word for hot flashes because they rarely get them. And the median duration of symptoms is about 10 years. Vasomotor symptoms happen to be the most common reason for sleep irregularities, which is why women are so motivated to not have them." "Heart disease is still the number one killer of women followed by cancer. So that means nearly 40% of all deaths in women are one of these two. Menopause represents an opportune time then to think about lifestyle changes, not only to help you during menopause, but also in the bigger picture to reduce the risk or reverse multiple chronic diseases." Dr. Nancy Louise Eriksen graduated with a B.S. in Biology from The University of Miami in Miami, Florida in 1981, and an M.D degree from Wright State University School of Medicine in 1985. Dr. Eriksen completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Wright State University affiliated hospital in 1989 and then a fellowship in maternal Fetal Medicine at The University of Houston Health Sciences Center in 1991. 58: Prescribing Lifestyle Medicine in Texas
Aug 31 2020 32 mins
Today’s bonus episode will include four of my favorite doctors in Texas. 00:56 - Drs. Munish and Bandana Chawla 13:09 - Dr. Rizwan Bukhari 22:27 - Dr. Nancy Eriksen This is a recap episode of my previous conversations with each of them. You will hear commonalities that they share as physicians. 30: Summary of Walk With Dr. Riz 2019
Dec 24 2019 6 mins
As the new year approaches, Dr. Riz and I wanted to share photos and videos from our walks this year. Walk with a Doc was started in 2005 by Dr. David Sabgir, a cardiologist in Columbus, Ohio. Dr. Sabgir invited his patients to go for a walk with him in a local park on a spring Saturday morning. To his surprise, over 100 people showed up, energized and ready to move. Since that first event in 2005, Walk with a Doc has grown as a grassroots effort, with a model based on sustainability and simplicity. A doctor gives a brief presentation on a health topic and then leads participants on a walk at their own pace. Walk with a Doc now extends all around the globe with over 500 chapters worldwide, including Walk with a Future Doc chapters led by medical students! Our first official walk was not well attended. As a matter of fact, a heavy storm rolled into the city right before we began our walk. We quickly made the decision to walk at Northpark mall. But it looked like Dr. Riz and I would be the only ones walking. Then walk in Pat & Dianne Doyle along with Dr. Catherine Gordon and her daughter who went out of their way to show support. Our following walk was at a local farmer’s market. While we enjoyed ending the walk at the market, we did not like putting people at risk by crossing streets and walking on pavement. Our final location ended being within the Village. final destination for our now monthly walks is found within The Village. The walking trail is a mile long, very scenic and full of ducks, squirrels and lots of birds. “This is a community that’s awake, alive and inspiring with activity—where residents are up early or unwinding after work with a walk, a run, and where you can always find the beauty of nature and the training partner or workout solitude you seek.” Did you know that in just a few short months we’ve had a total of 53 individuals join us? Our next walk will be on January 18 at 10 a.m. visit our plantbaseddfw.com for information on our walks and other events. Happy Holidays!

18: Staying Positive Through The Holidays | Mita Shah
Oct 26 2019 19 mins
Mita is a coach at heart. She recognizes that there is no cookie-cutter approach to transformation. Each day, she helps clients design and live healthy lives. Her custom, tailored approach is the key to follow-through. Most of us simply never learned how to nourish our bodies holistically, or worse, learned the wrong habits. Health journeys usually start with good intentions and determination but get side-tracked by the same culprit: stress and its accompanying emotions. Mita focuses on managing your stress and emotions. This helps avoid over-eating, being inactive, using tobacco or alcohol – that very factors that can derail your health. Over the past fifteen years, Mita has worked in many areas of health management, from health coaching to clinical research at hospitals and universities, conducting corporate seminars and developing health promotion programs. She has helped develop app based diabetes management programs. Her associations include but are not limited to Virginia Tech Polytechnic University, Montclair State University, Aetna, AbilTo, Worksite Wellness Council of Massachusetts, Wockhardt Hospital, etc. She has earned publication and an award from Society of Behavioral Medicine. She holds masters in human and clinical nutrition, masters in behavioral nutrition and physical activity, certification in sports nutrition & tobacco cessation and is a certified coach with National Board & American College of Lifestyle Medicine.
