Episode 95: The Job
Jul 20 2018 29 mins
Not long into his job as prison superintendent, Frank Thompson was asked to write the manual on lethal injection for the state of Oregon. Capital punishment had not been implemented in more than 30 years, and no one knew how to do it. Frank had to travel around the country learning how other states do it, and he asked his staff to practice. They simulated every step, including seating witnesses in the gallery, interacting with the press, and strapping each other to the gurney. Criminal is a proud member of Radiotopia from PRX. Episode 92: Dementia Americana

This episode picks up where Episode 91 left off. We suggest you listen to them in order. The early 20th century's biggest murder trial, and a particular brand of "madness." Visit thisiscriminal.com to see rare photographs from Harry Thaw's trial. Cameras were not allowed in the courtroom, but Boston Globe photographer E.E. Episode 43: 39 Shots
May 20 2016 32 mins
In 1979, a group of labor organizers protested outside a Ku Klux Klan screening of the 1915 white supremacist film, The Birth of a Nation. Nelson Johnson and Signe Waller-Foxworth remember shouting at armed Klansmen and burning a confederate flag, until eventually police forced the KKK inside and the standoff ended without violence. The labor organizers felt they'd won a small victory, and planned a much bigger anti-Klan demonstration in Greensboro, North Carolina. They advertised with the slogan: “Death to the Klan" and set the date for November 3rd, 1979. As protestors assembled, a caravan of nine cars appeared, and a man in a pick-up truck yelled: "You asked for the Klan! Now you've got 'em!" Thirty-nine shots were fired in eighty-eight seconds, and five protestors were killed. The city of Greensboro is still grappling with the complicated legacy of that day. The Greensboro Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s full report is available online. Today, Reverend Nelson Johnson is a pastor with Faith Community Church and serves as the Executive Director for the Beloved Community Center of Greensboro, which advocates for social and economic justice. Signe Waller-Foxworth is the author of Love and Revolution: A Political Memoir. Eric Ginsburg is the associate editor at the Triad City Beat. For this story, we also interviewed Elizabeth Wheaton, author of Codename Greenkill. Criminal is a proud member of Radiotopia from PRX. If you haven't already, please review us on Apple Podcasts! Great storytelling, lesser known stories, incredibly interesting characters - and then add Phoebe! A great listen.

DanceToMyOwnBeat Sep 18 2020
Wonderful story telling. Pheobe has such a soothing voice

Dani Sep 10 2020
Content is great but honestly... Phoebe just has the most soothing and wonderful voice on the planet!

walbyni Aug 21 2020
A must listen

Lars Aug 17 2020
This podcast is very well researched and also broadens one horizon and speaks to the people involved. Always very kind, I believe there are few podcasts of such integrity and professional care around. Definitely one of my favourite ones.

ariess Aug 12 2020
Always wonderful and unexpected storytelling!

Merekrissy Jul 30 2020
Pheobe has a great voice. Each episode is so interesting and makes me think about my own views on right and wrong.

Swordchucks May 13 2020
Unlike many true crime shows, Criminal never feel exploitive of the victims or celebratory of the perpetrators. It's fascinating look at different crimes and crime adjacent subjects from a variety of perspectives. Very well done. And Phoebe Judge has one of the best podcast voices out there.

Andrés Rodríguez Jun 03 2020
Interesting stories, with great guests, and directed by a masterful storyteller. Anything vaguely or very directly related to crime can be featured here.

Steve Moser Jun 14 2020
Nobody does this like Phoebe Judge. She is a consummate journalist, has a masterful approach, and her voice is ethereal. Six stars if I could.

wildirishman64 Jul 25 2020
Omg her voice! I love her! She is the best narrator of any of my many podcast. I could listen all day. Love you Phoebe

drivendorea Jul 11 2020
Brilliant story tel, even if you are not into true crime.

amlange Jul 04 2020
The most important true crime podcast. Tackles crime from the angle of storytelling about real people, not sensations. Humane and grounded. Stories vary from fun and hopeful to tragic, sinister and unjust. Plus, Phoebe Judge has the best voice in podcasting.

annelko Jul 03 2020
Phoebe is an excellent storyteller

Kareem Jun 25 2020
A favorite of long-standing. I love the types of stories you cover and how they often feel more fresh and intimate. It's a real good escape podcast and it's beautifully done. Hard to find a podcast I recommend more highly. It's a credit to storytelling!

Great little story... accidentally doing good...

BluPossum5 Jun 04 2020
One of my favorite podcasts. Topics are widely varied, but all roughly crime-related. Anyone fro. The true crime fandom should give this a try as something a little different than the podcasts that detail only murders and disappearances.

Stable Genius May 24 2020
Been listening to Criminal a long time. It's really a great podcast

Lumbago May 22 2020
Phoebe rules! EXCELLENT!!!

Fritz Weaselface May 15 2020
Always a thought provoking podcast. Woops! You made me shed a tear for Peggy Jo Tallis (I don't cry all that easy).

RomaTherapy May 14 2020
Great podcast

KHouske May 03 2020
Criminal has been a long respected and intellectually intriguing listen to me for years! Must mention another of their quality productions "This is Love".

Lynda May 01 2020
Every week I try and say "I'm Phoebe Judge" just when she does....try and pick the same moment. It's the little things....Phoebe has THE best voice for a podcast and I just wish the shows ran a little longer sometimes. She covers the cases or stories that none of the others do as well. I also listen to This Is Love which is guaranteed to have me snivelling almost every episode ! I'm Lynda Kelly ...and this is my review.

Clarice Starling May 01 2020
Phoebe Judge has achieved the impossible: she tells stories of crime that aren't prurient or exploitative. Listening you only ever feel fascinated and intrigued. Next ghoulish or titillated. I love the vast area her crimes can cover: from hijacking a plane to slavery to identity theft. She's a great storyteller.

laur_true Apr 23 2020
Love the perspective showing the humans who were affected by this. So beautiful and honest. Sad. But such great story telling. Nice to see that the victims story gets told rather than the perpetrator

tgraham1313 Apr 21 2020
I love hearing the unusual side of true crime. Not everything criminal is murder so this podcast adds spice and flavor to the regular menu of true crime. Thank you for a different option. Keep up the great work!

Rhiannon Apr 16 2020
My favourite take on true crime. Tells a variety of stories and treats people like people.

dgoodman1985 Apr 16 2020
Amazingly well written and narrated podcast about crimes and other ephemera loosely tied to criminal activity. Lots of amazing glimpses into daily life. Best friend podcast but not really "true crime".

obama Apr 15 2020
There's quite a lot of law & order podcasts out there now, but Phoebe does a great job cultivating very interesting episodes to make this podcast stand out from the rest. Even after 137 episodes, she still keeps the quality high. What makes it great is that it isn't just case after case review, but sometimes a look at a case or an individual and their impact on the way society practices law & order forever. Still can't recommend her Life podcast she tries so hard to advertise though.

nakkis Apr 12 2020
Hands down the best crime podcast out there. The stories are often surprising, and Phoebe has this amazing warmth and curiousity towards everything and everyone.
