• It was on this date in 1565, that Pedro Menéndez de Avilés sighted land near St. Augustine, Florida and founded the oldest continuously occupied European-established city in the continental United States.


• August 28, 1609, Henry Hudson discovered Delaware Bay.


• That same date in 1830, The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad’s new Tom Thumb steam locomotive raced a horse-drawn car, presaging steam’s role in U.S. railroads.


• It was also this date in 1845 that The first issue of Scientific American magazine was published.


• The Carrington event was the strongest geomagnetic storm on record to strike the Earth. Electrical telegraph service was widely disrupted on this date in 1859.
