The Cecil Hotel was opened in 1927 by hotelier William Banks Hanner. Hanner envisioned the hotel as a West Coast getaway for the aristocratic elite. However, his plan was never quite given the opportunity to come to fruition. Soon after the Cecil Hotel opened it's doors, The Great Depression struck and the Cecil's halls began to fill with vagrants, addicts, and worse. Before long, the Cecil Hotel began to be known not for it's socially elite clientele, but instead for the seemingly endless stream of tragedies that began to occur there.
