Hello, and welcome to another episode of The Good, The Bad, and The What!? The show in which we discuss three films that we have deemed "good," "bad," or "what!?" within a subgenre, theme, motif, director or actor's filmography, and more!
This week, Ryan and Chris dive into three sequels (or threequel in one instance) to the biggest hits of 1984 that were too early to be "legacyquels" but too late to strike while the iron is hot, which is the core question of this episode: can lightning strike twice? We start with one we believe does, with "Gremlins 2: The New Batch" from 1990, Joe Dante's glorious money-burn that self-sabotaged the series but in the most subversive way possible. Then, we move into 1994's "Beverly Hills Cop III," in which you can sadly feel the desperation in every frame, despite some positive attributes. Finally, we move into "Ghostbusters II" from 1989, a film that goes through the motion but still captures some of that magic from the original. The basis for this episode also stemmed from the upcoming releases of "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire" (March 22) and "Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley" (Summer 2024).
