A little knowledge is a dangerous thing’: it’s career-altering. The proverb ‘a little knowledge is a dangerous thing‘ expresses the idea that a small amount of knowledge can mislead people into thinking that they are more expert than they really are, which can lead to much bigger mistakes being made. That little knowledge lulls you into believing that what you think is happening is the ONLY thing happening, and more often than not this is simply not the case.  Acquiring, organizing, understanding, and visualizing (or presenting) data are key skills to help you get and present the full picture.

In this Meet the Gurus session, Dave Langer helps us to understand how to cull out the nuances within data sets: avoiding the “little knowledge” that appears on the surface, and helping you to access and visualize the full story.  Powerfully, Dave talks about how this is done with tools most people already use, including Excel. Why is this important to your career?  Data isn’t just for data analytics teams anymore, as it is touched by most roles. Data is can be quickly misunderstood, as many tools make understanding look easier than it really is. Likely one of the first interview questions you will be asked in a technology role is about data, and what tools you are familiar with in its analysis.  Please check out our Techbytes:
