Our special guest today is Matthew Smith, a Partner in our Litigation Department, and the Head of our Public and Regulatory Law team! Matthew studied Jurisprudence at University of Oxford before undertaking the Bar Vocational Course at the Inns of Court Law School, and being called to the Bar in 1993. During his legal career, Matthew has worked at some extremely well known Chambers – Gatehouse (formerly Hardwicke) Chambers, One Crown Office Row, and Warwick House Chambers - , for several Law Firms, including Barlow Lyde & Gilbert and Capsticks, and for a number of central Government Departments, including what is now the Government Legal Department, HM Treasury, and the Home Office. Matthew also joined legacy Bircham Dyson Bell in 2004, returning again in 2017 and has remained with the firm since then. Matthew has some fantastic insights into what it is like qualifying as a barrister but working in a UK law firm, working in both public and private practice and what it is like working on some of the country’s most prominent inquiries and inquest.
