In concert with the heady backdrop of California during the revolutionary 1960s, these two maverick thinkers sought to fuse the spiritual revelations of the East with the scientific revolutions of the West, or to combine the very best elements of Zen Buddhism, Western psychology, and Indian yoga into a decidedly utopian vision that rejected the dogmas of conventional religion. In Big Sur, California, at Esalen, the natural world is just as crucial as the spiritual one, science and faith not only commingle but are staunch allies. The roots of Esalen run through every notorious name involved in the 1960’s counterculture, psychedelic movement, & the CIA’s MK Ultra. Founders Michael Murphy and Dick Price were heavily influenced by those making their legacy within psychology history. Michael Murphy began the Human Potential Movement along with George Leonard, who served as President of Esalen, past president of Association for Humanistic Psychology, and co-founder of Integral Transformative Practice International. The Human Potential Movement was given shape and purpose by the Brooklyn-born psychologist Abraham Maslow, who created perhaps the best-known modern pyramid. Called the Hierarchy of Needs, the pyramid maps the journey from survival needs like food and shelter to what Maslow called self-actualization. Unlike ancient pyramids, the Hierarchy of Needs is not a symbol of wealth, power, authority, or immortality. Instead, it’s a seven-step path toward individual fulfillment that’s open to everyone. **Brandy - Twitter # @aka_brandyrenee** "It all makes sense now.
