In this episode, Alyssa sits down with Emily for a really honest conversation on the unseen struggles of mental health, particularly when it comes to depression and OCD.

Questions we talk about:

  • Why don’t you start by telling people a little bit of your story and walking us through your journey. When did you first start to realize you struggled with things like anxiety and depression (maybe even if you didn’t have a name for it at the time)?
  • Did you feel safe telling adults or mentors about things you were struggling with during this process or did you feel like it was a struggle no one would understand?
  • Talk us through how faith plays out in the middle of this. What kinds of questions did you have for God? What things or promises about His character were particularly hard for you to believe and cling to?
  • Do you think this kind of suffering is talked about enough in the church today? How do you see the church handling these issues?
  • Let’s talk about showing compassion and meeting practical needs in the lives of suffering people. Can you think of any specific things people did that have been encouraging, lifegiving, helpful to you over the years? How have you seen the church come around you?
  • What encouragement would you give to someone who is also struggling with anxiety/ depression?
