It is also the first head to head game that Sarah has had to play after getting through on a walkover, so she was undoubtedly nervous.Sarah started the game by choosing the 'Las vegas' Icon and her favourite takeaway is a sandwich filled with savoury sausage and spicy sauces.Lora was asked how she cheered people up -and she felt she had to join them in their misery before cheering them upLora's second question was resonant with her eldest sons hobby of climbing 14,000 ft mountains in that she would never climb Mount Everest.Sarah chose the 'Flowers' icon for question 2 and was definite that pink was not a colour she would wear. Her third question let her talk about her collection of Shot glasses - which she began during a road trip and which grew because people travelled and returned with them, for her to keep. The 'Tower Bridge' icon was also chosen by Lora, who then talked about her collection of Flamingos - which soon had the whole group talking.Question four was about the last time Lora had carried an umbrella - a trip to New York soon stopped her from doing so again. This umbrella story led Sarah to talk about her own umbrella story in which she saved the day during a wedding. The 'Plate of fish and chips' icon was Sarahs final question and her answer included body building, getting hurt and never doing sit -ups again. In her final question "who should live for ever?" Lora turned the question into 'What should live forever' and spoke of the ideals of; equality, truth, freedom and justice should live forever through telling those who come after.Funkquest is an interactive conversation show. FunkQuest - Bryan Falchuk - Someone else who would be choosy in a traffic jam...
Dec 03 2019 13 mins
Bryan Falchuk lives one day at a time. And working out how he can do what he wants to do and achieve his goals while looking after his family is a challenge for all of us.Q1. Bryan picked the VW camper van and the question is "What brand are you most loyal to?"Bryan said Apple or Garmin BUT did indicate that he isn't a total slave. When his Garmin watch broke, he couldn't get on with Apple.I suggested that large corporations being in a space that they just felt they needed to.First Apple computer 1976 so 76 points scored.Q2. Bryan knew the football shirt and so scored a bonus point. Total 77.Bryan chose the phone and the question is "What was your most recent lie?"Bryan recounted shooting a video BEFORE his book was published saying that it was a best seller. This is the world today. Best selling...But what category ? In paddleboard yoga?I recently finished a book by Tyler Hamilton who was one of Lance Armstrong's main wing men.In a memorable passage, he recounts that if you look carefull at all cyclists on the podium from that era, you will see expressions of fear.Fear that they are going to get caught and found out. Because they are living a lie.Q4. Bryan chose the car and the question is "What from the present will withstand the test of time?"Bryan answered mindfullness and plant based eating.Do we need to be far down a road before we stop and make changes? The political system in western cultures is on the way to being broken - how far down the road will we need to go before we make changes?Their was no sign saying "Industrial Revolution - For 2 weeks only" - people living through it had no idea.89 points (French Revolution 1789) - Total 209Bryan correctly identified George Harrison. First person (I think) to get both bonus points on offer.Total 210Q5. Bryan chose George Harrison and the question is "When was the last time you had a new lease of life?"Bryan told us a bit of his back story and I can't quite make out how we ended at 274 points but we did.

FunkQuest - Nathen Aswell- What happens if music runs the whole show?
Nov 29 2019 16 mins
In this Funky Thinkers with Vancouver based musician and speaker, Nathen Aswell, the rock group XTC how musicians make money in the days of YouTube and spotify and the comino.Being a musician, I told Nathen that I would be picking all the icons for him.He agreed and his pre game reconnaissance led him to that conclusion also.Q1. Nathen picked the cassette tape and the question is "Tell us about your record and tape collection when you were younger"Nathen mentioned a couple of artists that were before my time and then the English rock group XTC. Apparently they don't tour anymore despite the glut of throwback artists that are touring.I guessed that "Making plans for Nigel" by XTC was 1979 so Nathen scored 79 points. Good start.Nathen knew the Soviet Union soccer short so scored an extra bonus point. Total 80.Q2. Nathen picked the LP record and the question is "How many cards did you get on your last birthday?"A solid discussion about the merits of real life birthday cards vs birthday wishes on Facebook and other social media.Nathen told me before hand that he had recently celebrated his birthday and replied to every single person who wished him a happy Facebook birthday. His score increased to 140. Work out how old he is.Total 140Q3. Nathen picked the radiogram and the question is "When you are old, what do you think children will ask you to tell stories about?"Nathen answers MUSIC. Good discussion about how musicians can make money in the age of YouTube and spotify.Nathen indicated that he had been a musician for 46 years. 46 points scored.Total 186.Q4. Nathen picked the girl playing the guitar and the question is "Who do you go out of your way to be nice to?"Nathen replied "everyone" Good answer. Rounded up to 200 (to make it easy for me to add up).I didn't want to risk Nathen being embarrassed by not know George Harrison. (Like you sometimes do when you are under pressure) so I awarded the point.Total 201.Q5. Nathen picked George and the question is "When was the last time you had a new lease of life?"Nathen told us about his recent trip to walk the comino trail in Spain.Off mic, he had earlier told me that a good rule of thumb was to only carry 10% of your bodyweight in you pack. When he got home, he weighed his pack and realised he was at 27%. And used this as a sign that he needed to minimalise his life.Powerful lesson. The comino trail is 779 kilometres long so 79 points scored.Total 280. Very solid score and onto third in the leaderboard.Nathen Aswell is post season playoff bound....

FunkQuest - Dana pharant - How to raise your ambition from 60% to 80%
Nov 27 2019 15 mins
Dana Pharant is a TWO time FUNKY THINKER. As well as being the only Dana Pharant in the world, she is a speaker and coach.Q1. Dana picked the cassette tape and the question is "Tell us about your record and tape collection when you were younger."It is remarkable that in the days of cassette recorders, virtually every teenager around the world was sat rewinding cassettes with pencils and pens.It is a wonder the single use battery ever took off.Because Pink Floyd were the first number one of the 1980's - 80 points scored.Q2. Dana knew that the shirt was a football shirt and probably european. 3/4 point bonus scored.Dana picked the telephone and the question is "Tell us about your most recent lie"Most people on the show don't tell lies - so we may have to change this question. 20 points only scored.Total 100 3/4Q3. Dana picked the London (red) bus and the question is "How ambitious are you really?" It is powerful stuff when a professional speaker indicates that they rate themselves as 6/10 on the ambition scale. Why I asked?Because Dana admits she doesn't follow up as much as is possible and that this could bump it up to an 8/10.If there is anyone reading, listening or watching who is an AUTHORITY on follow up. Please get in touch so we can have you on the show to discuss this further.6/10 on ambition. 6 points scored.Bit of a sloppy answer as far as Funk points are concerned.Q4. Dana picked the girl playing the guitar and the question is "Who do you go out of your way to be nice to?"Dana said her inner circle of friends. A continuation of the discussion from question 2 about do you be honest with someone or tell them a lie not to hurt their feelings?Dana did not know who George Harrison was.Q5. Dana picked the roller skates and the question is "What got ruined because it became popular?"(Good answer this).Dana said personal development.Funky Thinkers view this as just more gurus to follow and just another industry.63 points scored.Total 263.Solid answers all the way through.Let down only by the low scoring 6 on the "How ambitious are you question?"This really could have challenged the leaderboard with a better score.Good for the middle rankings of the Funkquest leaderboard and probably good enough for the end of season playoffs.

Total 228After a good start talking about Verizon, Gabrielle's effort went slightly downhill.Only 13 for the Salem witch story and 30 for the shoe. Rescued by the 80 on the roller skate.Good for 10th place on the leaderboard but how long can she maintain that position.

FunkQuest - Cathy Weiss - World Champion Swimming Karate
Nov 05 2019 21 mins
Whatever you think about alternative lifestyles and points of view, being a FUNKY THINKER means you listen to other points of view and decide for yourself if you want to find out more.Cathy Weiss is (I think) the first clairvoyant we have had on the show. Cathy got 20 points start because I said I was going to be stricter on the time limit as I had allowed some answers to run over in recent episodes.Q1. Cathy chose the astronaut and the question is "What problem are you currently grappling with?"Cathy and her husband are discussing moving to Australia. (Where the Queen is actually Head of State).Either as a worker or a tourist. Depending on how the immigration points stack up.Is Australia the most regulated country in the western world? That's what I had thought. The target is 65 points (to enter Australia) and so Cathy scored 65 points. Total so far 85.Cathy kind of new the Soviet Union shirt so scored 1/2 a point.Q2. A short discussion arose about the orange space hooper icon. (Not for the first time with a North American audience).Cathy chose this and the question is "What is your secret talent?"After a short discussion about swimming pool karate and the world wife carrying championship. One of those is real - guess which, we moved onto other matters.Cathy realised that she is a clairvoyant. I aksed what she would say to people who disagreed or doubted. A shrug of the shoulders was the reply.A swimming pool is 25 metres long so 25 points scored.Total after Q2. 110 1/2 points.Q3. Unlike most women, Cathy did not pick the shoe. (If someone sells shoes like these, please get in touch).Cathy chose the typewriter. The question is "What is some insider knowledge that only you have?""Humans have the capacity for ANYTHING"

FunkQuest - Michael Barnes - Cincinnati hacking homeless.
Oct 31 2019 21 mins
Michael Barnes has a science PhD and stepped out of corporate life five years ago.He works in a number of fields including Cincinnati Hacking Homelessness. Q1. Michael picked the astronaut icon and the question is "What problem are you currently grappling with?"Michael updated us on his Cincinnati hackling homeless project and wanting to get the views of the whole of the community. 24 points scored.Q2. Michael successfully guessed the Soviet Union soccer shirt. Total 25.Michael picked the shirt and the question is "Where is the most unusual place you have been?"Michael went to Moscow in 1994.Is Moscow safe to visit? We see other countries on TV and assume that they really are like that. We were brought up to think that Russia (or the Soviet Union) was scary and dangerous.People are people all around the world. They have thoughts, fears, dreams, wants, desires. The Funky Thinkers guide to visiting other countries.Obey local laws and customs. (They may be different to your own).Do what local police and officials say. (They could arrest you if you don't)If you see trouble - go the other way.(Check this insight from Lisa-Marie Platske on her visit to Ethiopia)As Michael visited in 1994, 94 points scored.A Russian hat is called a Ushanka. (Picture below)Total 119 pointsQ3. Michael picked the London bus. The question is "How ambitious are you really?"I had never heard this before (and if anyone knows more detail, please get in touch, we woul love to get you on FUNKQUEST).Everyone has a circle of life. Feeling good, feeling bad. It goes in cycles and takes around a month.Michael ventured that for most high performing people, it went in days if not hours.Michael wants to roll out his homeless project to 100 cities. 100 points scored. Total 219Q4. Michael picked the girl playing the guitar. The question is "Who do you go out of your way to be nice to?"Any outsider or bystander. We talked about people at networking events. Standing alone. Waiting for someone to come and talk to them.Michael scored 6 points. On account of the siz degrees of separation thing. Q5.Michael thought that George Harrison was Inigo Montoya so no points scored on that.He chose George Harrison and the question is "When was the last time you had a new lease of life?"Given that we had already found in question 1 that Michael is constantly figuring out what he is going to do with his life, we agreed all the time.It is five years since Michael stepped out of corporate so 5 points scored.Contact Michael via CincinnattiHackingHomelessness.com and if you work in the homeless space, contact us and we will get you on the show.A solid entry onto the leader board from Michael with 230 points.A good start and the 100 points for wanting to roll out his homeless project to 100 cities.Went off the rails a bit with only scoring 6 for the "Who do you go out of your way to be nice to?" question and 5 because of the 5 years since he stepped out of corporate.Nevertheless, a good effort.

FunkQuest - Ben Reuter- 'Face to face conversations will stand the test of time.'
Oct 29 2019 25 mins
Ben Reuter is an exercise physiologist and believes that movement should be a lifestyle choice rather than a bolt on extra.Q1. Ben picked the camper van. The question is "Which brand are you most loyal to?"Ben told us that he is on his 1000th straight day of drinking a double espresso from a niche coffee machine maker.Score 89 points.Ben did know the CCCP football shirt. (Because he had listened to back episodes).Q2. Ben chose the telephone and the question is "What was your most recent lie?" Ben told us about telling his dogs that he would take them to the park. AFTER he finished this next project or task. I asked him about deadlines, projects and tasks in the academic world. Pretty much the same as the real world (his words). Some you can ignore and some really are set in stone.Ben is working on a chapter for a book with a co-author. The deadline is 31st October and so Ben scored 31 points. Total 121Q3. Ben chose the typewriter and the question is "What's some insider knowledge of your industry that you can share with us?"Ben gave two pieces of advice. The first from the academic world is that you will always have stuff to do. Be comfortable with that. Accept there is nothing you can do about it.The second was from the physiology world. Contrary to popular belief. Muscle stiffness that day after a hard session is not caused by lactic acid build up.It is caused by micro muscles tears causing inflamtion.Because a standard marathon is 26.2 miles, Ben scored 26.2 points.Q4. Ben chose the blue car. The question is "What from the present will withstand the test of time?"A decent length discussion about human relationships. Some people ARE happy shouting at mindless trash on TV.Only Funky Thinkers will seek out people with a different point of view knowing it's OK to disagree without descending into the cesspit of social media. To make it easy on the maths, I rounded Ben's score up to 200. (You try adding .2's in your head...)Ben knew who George Harrison was. (Again shows the benefit of listening to Funkquest back episodes). +1 pointQ5. Ben chose the horse drawn carriage. The question is "What things about the opposite sex most confuse you?"Ben believes that men are more direct, women less so.The exception being women from southern states (in the US) who could be as insulting as can be, so long as they added the words "Bless your heart" on the end.Ben scored 90 points for this question. Why ? I don't know.Which means that we have a NEW leader on the leaderboard.Ben should expect dancing girls and general fuss at his house in the next few days.Ben has two podcasts and you can find the links to these on this link.A storming episode with Ben Reuter takes him to the top of the leaderboard.Interesting answers on muscles soreness, communicating with the opposite sex as well as the human relationship.

FunkQuest - Isabel Firecracker - Procrastination even affects Funky Thinkers.
Oct 22 2019 21 mins
Isabel Firecracker is a life and career coach helping modern childfree women get what they want. Why so Funky?Having such strong help views is one thing - having them while living in a socially conservative country such as Colombia is another. In this episode, procrastination, Auschwitz, knowledge, books and that guy from the Beatles.Isabel Firecracker got an initial one point start for being the first person from Colombia to play Funkquest.Q1. Isabel chose the man on the moon and the question is what problem are you currently grappling with.Being honest (a good Funky Thinker quality), Isabel said procrastination. Her brain is like chicken brain. And Isabel, they offer of sending a picture of your desk and adding it to the show notes is still open...Funky Thinkers think that procrastination is an internet disease. Before the internet, we would focus on one thing until completion. Watching a TV show, doing homework.DONE. UNTIL. COMPLETION.Now, we are playing on phones, watching TV, doing other stuff. We would like to hear more about how people deal with procrastination. People we need on the show. Someone who has got procrastination and dealing with distractions DIALLED.Isabel has 80 things on her desk. So 80 points scored.Q2. Isabel did know that the old Soviet Union football shirt was a football shirt was. But not the country. So 1/2 point. The question is "Where is the most interesting place you have been?"Isabel had recently been to Auschwitz Birkenau concentration camp in Poland.Instead of being gloomy as she expected, it was a bright sunny day and almost like a public park.Very unusual (and FUNKY for a Colombian person to go to Auschwitz).Stories are that the silence at these places is almost defeaning. People talking in hushed voices and are there to learn about the history.Auschwitz was liberated in 1945 so Isabel got 45 points. Total FUNKPOINTS so far 126 1/2Q3. Isabel picked the show (most ladies do) and the question is "What are you currently worried about?"Not much was Isabel's answer. The quote from Reinhold Niebuhr cropped up. Although, when recording the show, we couldn't remember it, or him.“Lord, grant me the strength to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can,and the wisdom to know the difference.” To make the maths easy, I rounded Isabel's score up to 150 points.Q4. Isabel picked the car - I think this is the first time it has been picked. The question is "What from the present with stand the test of time?"Isabel said knowledge and I slightly pressed her about what is knowledge in the days of the internet. With so much stuff out there, what people THINK is important. The internet is the world's school gate.20 points scored. Total 171 1/2Q5. Isabel picked George Harrison and the question is "When was the last time you had a new lease of life.A quick discussion about what this phrase meant. Is it an anglo-phile phrase? I didn't think so.I told the story about Vinnie Jones (retired British footballer) recounting how after his wife died, he noticed things going on as normal.Isabel has a new lease of life in 2017. So she scored SEVENty points.Total 240 1/2 Enough for fourth place on the leaderboard.Isabel Firecracker is host of the honest uproar podcast and can be contacted It's getting super tight at the top of the FUNKQUEST leaderboard.Lana Nelson (Lana from Montana) still upfront followed by longtime second place Michael Sherlock. The pack is gathering and it will surely need a standout...

FunkQuest - Rustie MacDonald - War of Education
Oct 11 2019 21 mins
Rustie MacDonald is a multiple author, speaker and radio show host. Each round consists of ONE FUNKY question. The player selects the icon which most tweaks their interest. Each Funky visual has a Funky question. The Funky insight is that the question may or may not be related to the icon.SO potential Funksters have to think on their feet to score points. Points are awarded by me for FUNKY answers...What's so good about FUNKQUEST ?Funky Thinkers know that IDEAS only come from free-flowing CONVERSATION.Listening (without prejudice) to new ideas and speakers from outside your usual network truly qualifies as FUNKY.Each question has a strict time limit. So no multi-headed long and complicated self indulgent stories to endure. Just short punchy bite-sized truly Funky ideas, as we GET THE FUNK OUT!Q1. Rusty chose the cassette tape. The question is "Tell us about your record and tape collection when you were younger"Two albums cropped up. The musical Jesus Christ Superstar and the Stray cat strut.Rustie played both of these until they wore out. Although we might have come across the Stray Cats at different points in their career.People we need on the show. Anyone with an understanding of music and why it has the emotional impact on us that it does. Score 81 points. This is the approximate year that I became aware of the stray cats.Q2. Rustie chose the space hopper. Although did not know what it was. A short discussion followed. The Soviet Union shirt score half a point. The quesion is "What's your secret talent?" and Rustie replied cooking. Basil, onion and garlic especially. We talked about overweight people in the US. Plus, people who are able to listen without prejudice and take something in rather than blindly ruling it out.Rustie made a good pitch for 34,000 points but I was having non of it and awarded 34.Total 185 1/2Q4. Rustie chose the radio gram and the question was "What habit do you have now that you wish you had started earlier?"We discussed staying in bed and staring at the ceiling for 10 minutes. In a world where we are told we need to crush it, and blast it and smash it, how FUNKY is it to spend 10 minutes listening to your breath and planning what you need to do that day. (Or whatever?)Score 10 points (for 10 minutes).Total 195 1/2Q5. Rustie chose the roller blades and the question is "What got ruined because it became popular?"We came up with a list.TV,Romance, The internet, social media.Hands up if you remember the world before social media where you could go and build a tree house?Rustie score 70 points because that is the time most FUNKY THINKERS associate with this lifestyle.Total 265 1/2Not good enough to get on to the podium but surely good enough for the end of season playoffs.

Aug 15 2019 23 mins
Carrie Brummer recently moved house - by driving for five days... We learn about lying, judging people and the struggling artist syndrome. Is it fake news? So no multi-headed long and complicated self indulgent stories to endure. Just short punchy bite-sized truly Funky ideas, as we GET THE FUNK OUT!Q1. Carrie chose the spaceman and the question is "What problem are you currently grapling with?"Carrie recounted driving from Ottawa, Canada to Houston, Texas with a large fluffy dog in the car.Hotels don't generally allow dogs inside so en route Carrie had to stay with him AND figure out how to get food and stay with him all the while.I never realised that the language ability of a dog is about on par with a toddler and yes, some states do have motels at the side of the road, just as we see them in films...Pro tip - If you have a blow up mattress - don't blow it up by yourself with your own windpower. You will end up feeling light headed.Q2. Carrie did know that the shirt was a football/soccer shirt but not that it belonged to the old Soviet Union. So she scored half a point.Carrie picked the old telephone. The question is "What was your most recent lie?"Carrie doesn't lie and isn't comfortable talking about lying. What kind of lies are acceptable? The only kind of lies which were acceptable in Carrie's family are little white lies to make outsiders feel comfortable. When someone asks "How does this outfit look?" and you don't know them well enough to say "You shouldn't really be wearing that..." So you say "You look great..."How much is lying affected by the internet?Q3. Carrie picked the shoe. (Ladies always pick the FUNKY shoe). The question is "What are you currently worried about?"Carrie is worried about closing the sale and we discussed the difference in approaching buy a tyre (or tire) for your car (or a washing machine or any other essential but laborious purchase) versus a piece of art that you would just hang on a wall and look at.Plus - the more uncomfortable you put yourself, in different situations, the better.Q4. Carrie chose the laundromatter (or the laundrette). The question is "How do you judge a person?"Carrie judges a person by how much artwork they have in their home. When she met her now husband, there was no art. Result - if they stuck it out - he would be mouldable. What does someone have on their walls? Is it prints from Van Gogh or some random think from Ikea. Ikea do buy and licence work from established artists so don't diss it all.Plus "What books do people read?" is a great way to judge people AND a great conversation starter. How do you show your personality through art is another question to ask.Q5. But for being cheeky, I knocked it down to 50.Q3. Allen picked the London bus. (He always wanted to ride on one). The question is "How ambitious are you really?"Taking extra time at night - when everyone is watching game of thrones - to do the hard stuff that no one sees.Katherine Grainger (gold medalist London olympics, rowing) cropped up.When asked "Don't you miss your family, she replied. Allen chose the laundrette. (Or as he called it - The laundromatte). The question is "How do you judge people?"The concept of looking into people rather than up to them has cropped up before. Allen talked about the person's sense of self. Probably tricky to establish in the make believe world of Los Angeles. The fast show cropped up and that series was from about 1999 - so Allen scored 99 points.Q5. Allen did know who George Harrison was - so he score a point.Allen chose the horse and buggy.
