The Story of Roland does not begin and end with the ancient epic poem The Song of Roland that we examined quite some time ago. In that poem Emperor Charlemagne and his army, including the brave Knight Roland are fighting Muslims in Spain and ended with the deadly battle at Roncevaux Pass. In these other stories we learn about Roland’s deep friendship with fellow knight Oliver. We learn where he got his magic sword Durendal and we even talk about the one time Roland fought a sea monster!
