Once upon a time… there was an Ocean deep and calm and blue.

All this Ocean was filled with, was love. Every drop, every spray, every wave was pure, crystal clear love. All that swam in her cool waters felt this love, bathed in this love. It was an endless love. So many thrived with life from the love she gave. The Sun shone upon the Ocean lighting her up with sparkles of the sea. The Moon rose over her, pulling her with the swaying tides.

Hers was a place of solace for so many. Some feared her, some cherished her from afar, those who truly loved her, worshipped her, honoured her, were honoured in return.

The Ocean was curious, curious for what else there was. She was vast and deep, and this love that was her had always felt too much, was there any that could hold her love?

The Ocean rolled into shore after being so much in her deepness, she had come to see what lay upon the shallows. Her powerful spray hit, and filled a little puddle on the rockface. The puddle was in awe of the Ocean, the puddle wanted to know all about the Ocean, and so she began to show herself to the puddle. Her immense capacity for love, her care and nurturing of all that touched her. The puddle was mesmerised, and felt so full of life after the Ocean filling him to the brim.

The Ocean knew that she was the Ocean and yet she visited this little puddle and filled him each day. And each day, the attention and affection that the puddle showered the Ocean with, drew her in. She began becoming focused on the fullness of this little puddle. Each day, she would come to him and fill him some more. The puddle told the Ocean how beautiful she was, how magnificent, that he had never met anything quite like the Ocean. And somehow, over time, the Ocean forgot that she was the Ocean. This little puddle had captivated her.

The puddle became accustomed to being filled by the Ocean, the Ocean in turn each time felt less and less of herself. How could a little puddle match the Ocean and allow her to feel fulfilled? It was an impossible thought for a puddle to fill an Ocean. For all the love that she was for her depth and capacity, there was no way that this little puddle could fill her with love. He was simply not capable.

And so the Ocean withdrew, she confided in the Wind, and the Wind spoke… my love I chop your waters, I lift your waves, I carry messages across your seas. We work in harmony. I am the wind, yet you are the Ocean. We understand each of our strengths and purposes. Your greatness does not define you, for unlike the wind, you linger upon those who touch you. You enter their soul, and touch their essence. The Ocean wanted to know more.

The Ocean confided in the Moon and the Moon spoke… As I wax and wane I change your tides, I shine upon your depths. We work together to bring in flow and to show that nothing is permanent, everything is always changing. We too work in harmony, and from my vantage point I see how many puddles you create and fill on a daily basis. You along with the rain, the rivers and streams create these puddles and fill them. Every droplet of water is love, every puddle is filled with this love. Puddles are created from your love, yet no Ocean has ever asked of a puddle to fill it in return. Unless.. they have forgotten that they are the Ocean, as your love is for all.

The Ocean sighed and fell back into the depths. And as she contemplated all that had happened, and all the Wind and the Moon spoke of, a little fish swam by her. Then another, and another. She saw the sea life that surrounded her and loved her. She noticed those that played within her safety. She saw her sparkles of the sea, lit up by the Sun. She felt a cool current come through her, and the Ocean realised that she was not the only Ocean. Other Oceans came to connect with her and the deep, boundless love flowed between them, equally. This felt like home.

She came to see that the shallows were not to be her focus. She could fill puddles and puddles if she chose to, without even trying. Or, she could turn to her deepest parts and connect to those who matched her and her greatness.

To stay in the shallows, or to go to the depths, now seemed like an easy situation. For she was the Ocean, deep, calm and blue.

Have you ever felt too much? Like your emotions are too big for those around you? Or that you feel things deeply?

Perhaps you are the Ocean. and perhaps you have been filling puddles. It is impossible for a puddle to fill an Ocean with love. And our expectations are that if we feel love deeply, we want those we love to match us.

These are our expectations.

This is not to say I am this and you are that from a place of hierarchy. This is more seeing relationships and how we can expect a love so deep to match ours from those who are simply not capable. This occurs in all of our relationships. Being able to see clearly someones capacity for love is pure consideration and compassion for who they are, now. You can still be love for them, and have love for them, but you see that they will never be able to match your depths, and so being ok with that brings a huge sense of freedom.

It isn’t fair to ask an Ocean to be a puddle. I know I have in many relationships tried to squish myself into a puddle to make someone else feel comfortable, and for a time it works. Though there was always this sense of being unfulfilled. An Ocean isn’t afraid of solitude, and loves the feeling of space. We thrive in moments to ourselves, we recharge and reset. We are sustaining from our own deep well of love. A puddle fills from outside of itself. There must be outside validation, acknowledgment, poured in via a separate source that fills the puddle with love.

Can a puddle become an Ocean? Absolutely. I feel we all innately have the capacity to love deeply, although it must be their choice to do so and begins with vulnerability. No one can be forced to feel. Once they choose to be vulnerable, they start opening their depths of feeling. This is a toe dipping in, whereas you may feel like you are jumping off cliff faces. Encourage others dipping toes in with providing safety, free of judgement, providing an open mind and heart to allow them to come to their Ocean.

And remember, every droplet of water is love, water is love. So even the puddle is made up of millions of droplets of love. We can all grow together, love begets more love. So if you have felt like the Ocean in past relationships, look to your life now and see the other Oceans that surround you whether it be friends, family, loved ones, your current partner, run those currents together. And be a safe, vulnerable and loving presence around your puddles… for perhaps they are dreaming of becoming Oceans.
