On August 18, 1587, Virginia Dare was born in the ill-fated colony of Roanake (present-day North Carolina) to Ananias and Eleanor Dare, both of London, England. Virginia was the first English child born in North America, and was the harbinger of millions more to come.

Some would say that Virginia Dare was, in fact, the first American. Though the Roanoke Colony did not survive, subsequent expenditions proved fruitful, including Jamestown (1607), New Netherland (1614), Plymouth (1620), Maryland (1632), the Carolinas (1663), Pennsylvania (1681), and others scattered throughout. From these wellsprings, European settlement of the North American Eastern Seaboard began in earnest.

The colonies reflected the political situation of Great Britain back home, and the attitudes of their founders. From the Puritans of New England, the Dutch of New Netherland, the Quaker-Germans of Pennsylvania, the Roman Catholics of Maryland, the nobility of Virginia, the planters of the Carolinas, and the Scots-Irish of the backcountry, these settlements proved to be the foundations from which modern Americans would arise. Though the ethnogensis of Anglo-America was still nascent and incubating, by 1700 the conception had been made. British seed sowed American soil, and it remained to be seen what would grow.

Just who were these people who made the legendary voyages from the ports of Southampton and Liverpool to the New World? Where did they come from? Why did they head west? And what were their own origins? In essence, we strive to answer the question: where do Americans come from?
