Today, I am blessed to have Dr. David Harper here with me. As an educator, researcher, and health consultant, Dr. David Harper has studied the impact of diet on human health for many years. The culmination of that extensive work is the BioDiet, a well-formulated ketogenic plan that works with the body’s natural processes to improve health and reverse decades of damage caused by our collective carbohydrate addiction. Dr. Harper and Dale Drewery adopted the BioDiet in 2012 and the weight loss and health improvements they experienced led him to counsel hundreds of people on the Biodiet with similarly consistent and impressive results.

Dr. Harper is an associate professor of kinesiology at the University of the Fraser Valley and a visiting scientist at the BC Cancer Research Center, Terry Fox Laboratory. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia and completed a post-doctoral fellowship in comparative physiology at the University of Cambridge. He is on the scientific advisory board of the Canadian Clinicians for Therapeutic Nutrition and is a member of the Institute for Personalized Therapeutic Nutrition.

In this episode, we cover everything from the potential benefits of ketogenic diets for metastatic breast cancer patients to the intricate workings of the immune system and the therapeutic potential of dietary interventions. Dr. Harper's insights provide a fascinating journey through the complex interplay between diet, metabolism, and disease, offering hope and new perspectives on health and wellness. Tune in as we chat about how ketogenic diets offer a promising therapeutic approach for cancer treatment and neurological conditions by moderating glucose levels, promoting mitochondrial turnover, and enhancing cellular health through AMPK activation and arachidonic acid modulation.

[00:45] Inside the Keto Cure: A Three-Year Study on Metastatic Breast Cancer

  • The three-year study conducted by Dr. Harper and his colleagues focused on investigating the therapeutic benefits of a ketogenic diet for women with metastatic breast cancer. This research sheds light on alternative treatment options and highlights the potential of dietary interventions in cancer therapy.

  • Dr. Harper shares a personal connection to cancer, having lost his mother to the disease during his childhood. This personal experience fuels his dedication to cancer research and underscores the widespread impact of cancer on individuals and families.

  • Dr. Harper discusses the ongoing "war on cancer," emphasizing that it is an internal battle within our bodies. This perspective challenges the traditional notion of a war against cancer as an external enemy and underscores the complexity of cancer biology and prevention.

[06:45] The Immune System's Role in Disease

  • Dr. Harper outlines the three levels of the immune system: surface barriers, innate immune response, and adaptive immune system. Each level is crucial in identifying and destroying harmful agents, including cancer cells.

  • Inflammation, mainly through the innate immune response, is intertwined with cancer development.

  • Dr. Harper links chronic diseases like cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and Alzheimer's to metabolic dysfunction.

  • He highlights obesity, insulin resistance, and inflammation as interconnected components of the "axis of illness."

  • Dr. Harper emphasizes the role of diet, particularly high-carbohydrate diets, in exacerbating metabolic dysfunction and chronic disease. He advocates for a ketogenic diet, low in carbohydrates and high in healthy fats, as a means to improve metabolic health, reduce inflammation, and potentially prevent or manage diseases like cancer and diabetes.

[22:30] Insulin's Vital Role: Mitochondrial Health and Ketogenic Solutions

  • Dr. Harper emphasizes the importance of insulin as a signaling molecule, crucial for various bodily functions, including protein synthesis, regulating body fluids, and brain function.

  • He highlights the alarming trend of increasing diabetes and pre-diabetes rates among American adults, primarily attributed to lifestyle factors such as poor diet and obesity.

  • Due to poor dietary choices, Dr. Harper argues that dysregulation of mitochondria, the energy converters within cells, is the root cause of many chronic diseases, including diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer.

  • He advocates for a ketogenic diet, high in healthy fats and low in carbohydrates, as a means to reverse metabolic dysfunction, reduce inflammation, and potentially prevent or manage chronic diseases like diabetes and cancer.

[29:30] Revolutionizing Eating Habits: A Prescription for a Healthier Lifestyle

  • Dr. Harper emphasizes the importance of consuming various vegetables, particularly those that grow above the ground and are low in carbohydrates. This encourages a nutrient-rich and balanced diet.

  • He suggests replacing high-carbohydrate foods with low-carb, higher-fat options. For instance, opting for unsweetened, high-fat yogurt instead of sugar-laden varieties and using natural sweeteners like allulose instead of sugar.

  • Dr. Harper acknowledges that transitioning to a healthier diet may require more time and effort in sourcing and preparing food. However, he views this as a positive shift, promoting mindfulness and more nutritious eating habits compared to the convenience of fast food.

  • He advocates for a cultural shift towards appreciating food as an essential aspect of human life and culture, promoting communal eating experiences and emphasizing the enjoyment of different flavors and cooking techniques. This perspective contrasts with the convenience-focused, fast-paced eating habits prevalent in modern society.

[34:50] Cancer's Weakness: The Therapeutic Potential of Ketogenic Diets

  • Cancer cells rely primarily on glucose for energy due to their inability to undergo oxidative phosphorylation, unlike normal cells, which can utilize various fuel sources.

  • By reducing carbohydrate intake and increasing fat consumption through a ketogenic diet, glucose levels are moderated, depriving cancer cells of their preferred fuel source.

  • Beta-hydroxybutyrate, the primary ketone produced in a ketogenic state, acts as a potent cell signaler with multifaceted effects on cancer cells.

  • Studies, including those conducted with metastatic breast cancer patients, suggest that a ketogenic diet can complement standard cancer treatments by potentially inhibiting tumor growth, improving metabolic health, and enhancing the immune response without adverse effects.

[50:45] The Role of Mitophagy, AMPK Activation, and Arachidonic Acid in Ketogenic Diets

  • Mitophagy, the process of breaking down old mitochondria and generating new ones, is promoted by exercise by activating AMPK.

  • Like exercise, ketogenic diets activate AMPK, potentially contributing to mitochondrial turnover and overall cellular health.

  • Changes in arachidonic acid levels induced by ketogenic diets may influence the fluidity of cell membranes. This alteration could be linked to the efficacy of ketogenic diets in treating neurological conditions, such as epilepsy, by affecting cellular signaling and function.

  • Ketogenic diets have shown promising results in improving various neurological conditions, including epilepsy, depression, bipolar disorder, Parkinson's disease, and possibly autism. These positive outcomes suggest a link between mitochondrial function, cellular health, and neurological well-being.
