This Digital Orthopedics Conference session introduces the emerging field of AI agents and their potential applications in orthopedics, focusing on reactive and adaptable agents. Reactive agents operate on simple, rule-based systems suited for structured environments, while adaptable agents use memory and learning for dynamic tasks like virtual assistants. Multi-agent systems (MAS) involve groups of agents collaborating on shared goals, such as surgical support and post-operative care.

Key challenges include data privacy, system integration, network demands, and regulatory hurdles. The session also explores ‘copilots’—generative tools that provide real-time diagnostic and therapeutic support. Together, MAS and copilots aim to improve efficiency, real-time support, and patient care, despite challenges like privacy and interoperability.
