It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Jeet Heer, national affairs correspondent for The Nation, to round up the week in news. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Elon’s 6-digit spending spree for Trump, Pete Hegseth’s nomination, US healthcare, Trump’s expanding cabinet of billionaires, the blocked release of the Gaetz ethics report, job growth leading into Trump 2.0, Russia’s use of civilians for target practice, stalling Tesla sales, Israel’s most recent slaughtering of a humanitarian zone, and affirmative action in the US, before expanding on the coverage around the killing of United Healthcare’s CEO. Jeet Heer then joins, as he, Sam, and Emma dive right into the topic of Trump’s anti-establishment appeal, unpacking how his cabal of criminals – albeit largely wealthy and establishment-friendly ones – can capitalize on overwhelming disillusionment toward and rejection of US political institutions by at least providing SOME cathartic bucking of the system. Expanding on this, they parse through the particular role of the Democratic Party and its leadership, presenting Trump as an aberration from the deeply unpopular norms and establishment that guide US politics, while reiterating and centering their commitment to said establishment and norms, wrapping up with how these issues were drastically exacerbated by Joe Biden’s decision to run for reelection.
And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma unpack the attempt to spin Pete Hegseth as the “new” Donald Trump, tackle the gerontocratic decline of the Democratic Party, and watch Bill Clinton shame Palestinians for not happily embracing Israeli expansion. Hasan goes tweed, Russell Brand takes pity on the women he’s exploited, and Matt Walsh gets wildly outshined by a 12-year-old trans girl speaking to the masses outside of the Supreme Court.
