We interviewed the artist and filmmaker Raphael Reichl who is currently based in Mexico to talk about his video installation "Walking on sandy eggshells", which is part of the exhibition "Unfreezing the Scene. Kunsthalle Wien Prize 2022" at Kunsthalle Wien Karlsplatz.
Looking at this work the viewer faces two screens — on one side biologists are burying turtle eggs on a beach to keep this vulnerable species alive and on the second screen a worker is building a holiday home under precarious conditions to attract international tourists. So at the same time nature has to retreat for tourists who visit this place primarily because of its beautiful landscapes and it’s special wildlife. Raphael’s work explores this paradoxical relation and takes a closer look at the precarious working conditions of all people involved in this process.
