We talked with artist and curator Brook Andrew about his contribution to the exhibition “No Feeling Is Final. The Skopje Solidarity Collection”. For his installation, Brook Andrew picked eight works from the collection of MoCA Skopje by well-known artists like Jasper Johns or Pablo Picasso. The paintings are placed in surprising positions on the wall above a large inflatable object. The visitors can lie down on the inflatable and look at the paintings from quite unusual perspectives. Both the wall and the inflatable are connected by a striking black and white pattern inspired by indigenous designs that have been appropriated especially by Western modernist artists. Brook Andrew who himself has indigenous ancestry questions exploitative dynamics of cultural appropriation by bringing these works and ideas together on a whole new playing field.
