The arrival of Julia Álvarez on "Hablemos escritoras" is a tribute to the pioneers who carved a space for literature by Hispanic-origin writers in the United States. In 2014, President Obama awarded her the National Medal of Arts. She has been named Woman of the Year by Latina Magazine. Her books How the García Girls Lost Their Accents (A Plume Book, 1991) and In the Time of the Butterflies (Taller, 1994) are some of the most important works in the literature of this genre. Born in New York, her heritage is also Dominican, to which she pays tribute in her work. We celebrate with a conversation with Liliana Valenzuela her long trajectory and her book El cementerio de los cuentos sin contar (Harper Collins, 2024), translated by Mercedes Guhl. We are indebted to Viviana Castiblanco for her arrival at our project.
