On Tuesday, May 21st 2024, Jacob Shymanski and Kelly MacDonald attended the Vision Health Conference at the Christ Church Cathedral in Ottawa, Ontario. This year’s theme was the role of artificial intelligence in vision health.
The conference provided a wide view of the potential uses of AI in the field of vision health, and focused on technologies that are the most developed and most likely to be used in the short term.
The conference was hosted by Keith Gordon, a senior researcher for the Canadian Council of the Blind. Attendees were also welcomed by Jim Tokos, the President of the Canadian Council of the Blind.
The first speaker was Dr. Jutta Treviranus, who provided an overview of both the risks and opportunities that AI poses. Then, Dr. Delan Jinapriya spoke about AI in the field of Ophthalmology and explained how it could be used to diagnose glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and macular degeneration. The final speaker was Jason Fayre, who spoke about how AI is already being used in the creation of accessible devices.
To finish the conference, all three speakers were involved in a question and answer section. Both virtual and in-person attendees were given the opportunity to ask questions to the panelists.
This live broadcast was produced by Andy Frank, technical producers were Marc Aflalo and Grace Scoffield.
