• It was on this date in 1778, that The United States flag was formally recognized by a foreign naval vessel for the first time, when French Admiral Toussaint-Guillaume Picquet de la Motte rendered a nine gun salute to USS Ranger, commanded by John Paul Jones
• Also today in 1849, In New York City, James Knox Polk became the first serving President of the United States to have his photograph taken
• That same date in 1855, Texas was linked by telegraph to the rest of the United States, with the completion of a connection between New Orleans and Marshall, Texas
• It was 148 years ago today, that Alexander Graham Bell applied for a patent for the telephone, as did Elisha Gray
• It was also this date in 1899 that Voting machines were approved by the U.S. Congress for use in federal elections
• It was on this date in 1912, that The U.S. Navy commissioned its first class of diesel-powered submarines
