Did you know there was a movie adaptation of the film Wicked released this week? If not then we assume you must not see any commercials or advertisements in your life ever, because the marketing is PERSISTENT. And by all accounts it’s doing fairly well at the box office. That’s to be expected; the play that it is based on has been a smash success for quite some time. But that begs the question, why? What makes an adaptation of a 20+ year old play, based on an 85 year old movie, based on a 125 year old book so compelling and popular? On this week’s episode, Hannah, Mav, Katya, and Monica discuss the cultural impact and various adaptations of The Wizard of Oz, from the original book to the 1939 movie, and all the way up to the new film and a bunch of other adaptions in between. We focus on its thematic elements dealing with political resistance and otherism and how different eras have updated Oz narratives while maintaining its status as a cornerstone of American pop culture.
