Anger is telling us something. It's often telling us that something isn't right or that a boundary is being violated”. Cara Tuttle is a lawyer, consultant, and educator focused on addressing sexual assault and harassment in higher education, and she wants us to explore our anger as a key tool in assertiveness training. After years of working on a university campus, Cara found that assertiveness was a major struggle for women of all ages, and that has a lot to do with how women have been raised, and how complicated anger can be for women in particular. As Cara explains, “a lot of the women [I work with] have been raised to be well behaved. They've been raised to be pleasant, which delays them in asserting their boundaries.”

In this episode, Cara talks about her important book Drowning In Timidity: Women, Politeness, and the Power of Assertive Living, that she wrote to address the questions she heard from women over and over about how to speak up for themselves. Plus, we do a deep dive into anger, assertiveness and boundaries, to explore why anger is a good thing and why it’s so complicated for women; the small things you can do to create big change; and we even talk about the life-changing power of quality sexual education.
