#235 Navigating the Chaos of Insurance Coverage for Rehab with Edie Perkins
In today’s episode we talk with Edie Perkins, a former elite marathoner and cyclist, who shares her journey of being paralyzed from the chest down in a bike accident and navigating the inpatient rehab experience related to insurance coverage. She discusses the challenges of dealing with insurance, hospital case workers, and the healthcare system, emphasizing the importance of self-advocacy and understanding one's rights. Edie highlights the gaps in knowledge and support for spinal cord injury patients and stresses the need for early accurate information, advocacy, appeals education, and knowledge about and access to certified quality SCI facilities. Her experience with insurance appeals and the psychosocial challenges of SCI rehab led her to a career in disability advocacy, supporting others in their recovery.
