Thomas Dorsey Jr. (November 19, 1905 – November 26, 1956), an American jazz trombonist, composer, conductor and bandleader of the big band era. He was known as the "Sentimental Gentleman of Swing" because of his smooth-toned trombone playing. The Sheik of Araby, is a song that was written in 1921 by Harry Smith and Francis Wheeler, with music by Ted Snyder. It was composed in response to the popularity of the feature film, The Sheik, staring Rudolph Valentino.
