Elizabeth and Elliott have a look at scapegoats. The word has its roots in the ancient practice during the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, wherein the community would figuratively lay their sins on the back of a goat and then literally send the goat off into the wilderness, carrying their sins with it.
