Hello and welcome to another episode of Lexx Education - the comedy science podcast where comedian Laura Lexx tries to learn science from her normal younger brother Ron.

This week Laura and Ron are ruining Valentines Day for everyone in this very special Valentines Episode all about STIs.

First, Laura and Ron get to the bottom of one of the weirdest photos ever chosen to represent sexual health awareness.

Then Laura begins to talk Ron through the history of STIs and cures humans had for different genital diseases back when science was nothing more than witchcraft.

Starting from King Minos and working through the use of mercury Laura works through the speckled past of penises and vaginas. As expected, Laura is much more interested in the etymology than the science but it’s still pretty interesting.

Despite it not being a science episode they still manage to have an argument. This time it’s over whether or not Ron would be happy if he moved back to Brussels. It’s pretty weird tbh.

Then they get pretty judgey about choices Roger of Salerno made, the difficult nature of getting photos from Google and the beauty of Salerno.

We hit a pretty dark patch for women, followed by one of the very best rumours you’ve ever heard in your life. Then it goes and gets all dark again as the government steps in and makes laws to try and curb STIs that really only punish women.

Then Ron takes over with some medical science facts from the world of STIs…

💬 Show Notes

In this special Valentine's episode of Lexx Education, comedian Laura Lexx and her brother Ron dive into the rather unromantic world of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). With a cheeky twist, they explore the science behind what can go wrong when love is in the air.

Laura reminisces about her awkward upbringing and the infamous STI talk she never quite got from her parents, while Ron brings the facts straight from the medical field. They take a humorous look at a bizarre World Health Organization image that attempts to promote safe sex, leading to a discussion about the historical methods of contraception—like King Minos’ goat bladder condom!

As they journey through time, they uncover the ancient remedies for STIs, from Egyptian sandal oil to the questionable practices of medieval Europe. The duo tackles the misconceptions surrounding STIs, including the infamous “clap,” and the dark history of how society has often blamed women for these infections.

With a mix of laughter and shock, they delve into the statistics surrounding STIs today, discussing the staggering rates of infections and the importance of safe practices. They also touch on the serious consequences of untreated infections, including infertility and the impact on future generations.

Join Laura and Ron for a rollercoaster of laughs and learning, as they remind everyone to stay safe and get tested. After all, knowledge is power—even when it comes to the less glamorous aspects of love!
