Kapunda, about 80 km north of Adelaide, is known as Australia’s first successful copper mining town. Established in the 1840s, it quickly became a booming settlement, attracting miners from around the world. But with prosperity came hardship and life in Kapunda’s mines was brutal. Poor working conditions, deadly accidents, and exhausted labourers created an atmosphere of suffering.
