Mark Padun retired at the age of 28. In 2021, he delivered an exceptionally high-level performance at the Critérium du Dauphiné, winning Stage 7 from the peloton and producing one of the greatest climbing displays of that era. He defeated Sepp Kuss, Richie Porte, Miguel Ángel López, Geraint Thomas, and many other top GC stars. On Stage 8, he won from a breakaway, dropping the then relatively unknown Jonas Vingegaard, who was recovering from an injury. Despite these achievements, Padun was not selected for the Tour de France or the Olympics in 2021. However, he continued to perform strongly in the 2021 Vuelta a España. After that season, he moved from Bahrain Victorious to EF Education-EasyPost and competed in the 2022 Vuelta. Unfortunately, he was never the same after that.
