God sent Elijah the Tishbite to the brook Cherith, where he learned to depend on Him, receiving food and water by providence. When the brook dried up, God directed Elijah to Zarephath, where a widow would sustain him. In a time of great famine, he asked her to make him a cake before feeding herself and her son—a request that seemed unkind. However, he assured her that God would provide. She exercised faith in the Lord God of Israel and they were fed and sustained. But when the widow’s son died, Elijah, trusting in God’s power, prayed for the boy’s life to be restored. The Lord heard his prayer, revived the child, and Elijah returned him to his mother. Elder Chris explains that as we walk by faith in our pilgrimage, God’s grace and mercy becomes evident, reminding us that we can trust in the word of the living God.
