Communicating with our teens is challenging, and I’m not talking about THE talks, I’m talking about the every day stuff: Did you get that project done? Do you have everything you need for soccer? Where are you going, who will be there, and when will you be back?
These everyday conversations can cue eye rolls, sighs of frustration, and blank looks. And that doesn’t feel like communication. I’m in the thick of this, and maybe you are too. Even if you’re kids aren’t teens yet, when it comes to learning the Dos and Don’ts of communicating––the earlier the better.
So on this episode of the Heartful Parent Podcast, I’m sharing some essential DOs and DON’Ts in the hope that I can help you communicate better with your teens. You’ll hear the importance of empathy and respect, the common mistakes we make as parents, and some practical suggestions you can implement right away to really get through to your teen.
Finding ways to communicate about everyday stuff lays the groundwork for more sensitive conversations, which are inevitable at some point. It also helps our teens and young adult children turn toward us in difficult moments, instead of away from us. And isn’t that the end goal?
Thank you for listening. Please share this episode with another parent, we are not meant to do this alone!
I would love to hear from you if you could use more support like this. I work with parents both in one-on-one coaching and in the Heartful Parent Academy. Send me an email at [email protected].
