Dr. Homeyer is a Professor in the Professional Counseling Program and chair of the Department of Counseling, Leadership, Adult Education and School Psychology at Texas State University. Dr. Homeyer is proud to be involved with the growing, vital, and prominent program that trains mental health professionals, working with a dedicated set of colleagues, and mentoring students on their professional journey. She has worked as a professional actress, but it was her work as an investigator of child abuse that led her to her interest in counseling children. An advocate for children and play therapy, she participates extensively in service, teaching, and writing. Dr. Homeyer served several years on the Texas Association for Play Therapy Board of Directors and served two terms as President of the Association for Play Therapy Board of Directors.
Dr. Homeyer is spending a great deal of time traveling the globe. In Malaysia she has assisted a core group to develop play therapy in their country over the course of several years. In India she is part of a team that developed and teaches pastoral counseling at India Bible College and Seminary. Dr. Homeyer has also taught play therapy and sandtray therapy in South Africa, Australia, Mexico, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, Taiwan and even on a cruise ship! She is a frequent presenter throughout the United States.
Dr. Homeyer co-authored Sandtray: A Practical Manual; The Handbook of Group Play Therapy; Play Therapy Interventions with Children's Problems; and The World of Play Therapy Literature, as well as many book chapters and journal articles. Her work has been translated into Chinese, Russian, Korean, and Spanish. Her current areas of interest include exploring and researching the transferability of American counselor education (specifically play therapy) to international sites, with particular emphasis on cross-cultural and meta-cultural issues.
