Peace Talk Episode 247: Should I never try to stop myself from doing, saying, feeling something?

We look at willpower, discipline, structure, laws, rules and resolutions....and notice how often they have failed and don't appear to work.

Yet, someone asks "does this mean I should never try to stop my behavior, I should just DO it whenever the urge arises to do it?"

This is swinging in the complete opposite direction and using the thought "willpower doesn't work" to give the excuse to just fall into a behavior that isn't ultimately what I want.

What we truly want, is for the behavior that seems to be "required" to become unnecessary and irrelevant. What we truly want is to no longer be interested in the behavior.

The only way I have found to do this is to see what I'm thinking, believing and feeling it does for me--and to investigate this.

We even begin to laugh. We notice who we really are is peaceful already, a human being living life as best we can--learning, growing, loving.

In all-group sessions and solo sessions, we begin with a judgment...and move into the four questions and turnarounds.
